Chicago, Ill. - The Sweet Sixteen is where dreams start to crystallize in the NCAA Tournament, as teams battle for a coveted spot in the Final Four and, ultimately, a shot at the national championship. For Michigan's Nimari Burnett, this year's bracket brought a unique twist, presenting the chance to face one of his former teams-Alabama or Texas Tech-in his hometown.
Burnett, now a sixth-year senior, will take the court against Alabama, marking the Crimson Tide's fourth consecutive appearance in the Sweet Sixteen. His excitement is palpable.
"When the bracket came out, I saw them on our side and saw Texas Tech as well," Burnett shared from the United Center. "Whatever God had, I was ready for it."
Despite his history with Alabama, Burnett holds no grudges. He redshirted his first season with the Crimson Tide and contributed to their impressive 31-6 run in 2022-23, before transferring to Michigan. At Michigan, he's become a cornerstone, starting 105 consecutive games and playing a pivotal role in both the team's challenging and triumphant seasons.
This year, Burnett is averaging 8.5 points per game and shooting a sharp 39.5% from beyond the arc. His former coach, Nate Oats, speaks highly of him.
"Love Nimari. He's a great kid," Oats remarked.
"He's their best shooter. He's playing well."
While Burnett's legacy is more tied to Michigan, his connections to Alabama remain strong. He fondly recalls his interactions with Alabama's staff and Coach Oats at the Players' Era tournament in Las Vegas.
"Those are my people," Burnett said. "They know that I have a soft spot in my heart for them."
Alabama, under Oats' leadership, boasts a 154-57 record since his arrival, and they're eager to challenge Burnett and the Wolverines for a spot in the Elite Eight. Although the roster has changed since Burnett's time, his familiarity with Alabama's fast-paced style offers him and his teammates an edge.
"It's kind of like second nature," Burnett explained. "I understand what they like to do, how they like to play, and I think it's just an advantage for me and my teammates."
As Burnett prepares to face his former team in his hometown, he remains focused and composed. His journey through ups and downs has equipped him for this moment, balancing the excitement with a clear focus on advancing.
"Throughout my career, I've had times where I've worked too high or needed to chill out," Burnett reflected. "I'm really just even keel, and I'm excited for the matchup. Advancing from the Sweet 16 to the Elite Eight is the top priority in my mind right now."
