Michigan football is making a strategic move by bringing in Koy Detmer Jr. to shape one of college football's rising stars. Detmer Jr., following his stint with Kyle Whittingham and OC Jason Beck at Utah, steps into the role of quarterbacks coach for the Wolverines.
His primary focus? Guiding Bryce Underwood, a former five-star recruit, as he gears up for a pivotal sophomore season.
Despite the offseason's limited on-field interactions, Detmer Jr. has already gleaned valuable insights into Underwood's work ethic and aspirations. In a chat with Jon Jansen on the "In the Trenches" podcast, Detmer Jr. praised Underwood’s dedication.
"Bryce holds himself to an incredibly high standard," he noted. "He’s got big goals and he’s not just talking the talk.
This kid works hard every single day, both in the film room and the weight room."
Underwood, who clinched Michigan's starting QB position as a true freshman in 2025, showed flashes of brilliance with nine wins. His stats-2,428 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions, along with 487 rushing yards and six touchdowns-reflect both his potential and areas for growth.
As the Wolverines gear up for spring practice on March 17, Detmer Jr. and the coaching staff are laser-focused on refining Underwood’s skills. "This spring is all about sharpening his toolbox," Detmer Jr. explained. "We’re honing his footwork and timing on throws, using every opportunity to work with him one-on-one."
Detmer Jr. is clearly enthusiastic about the journey ahead. "Bryce is incredibly driven, and I’m grateful to work with such a talented young man.
He’s putting in the work to become the player he dreams of being." With this kind of commitment, both from coach and player, Michigan fans have plenty to be excited about.
