Michigan Wolverines Stun with Bold Defensive Tactics Ahead of Spring Practices

Larry Black is setting the tone for Michigan's defensive tackle group, blending grit with growth as spring practice looms.

The Michigan Wolverines are gearing up for spring practices starting Tuesday, March 17, and there's a palpable sense of anticipation in Ann Arbor. With a new coaching staff in place, it's a golden opportunity to fine-tune the team, especially the defensive line, which could use a boost in 2026.

Larry Black, the new defensive tackle coach, recently joined Jon Jansen on “In the Trenches” to share insights into his coaching philosophy and what he expects from his players.

Black's Journey to Michigan

Larry Black, a Cincinnati native and former Indiana football player, is no stranger to the Big Ten's intensity, especially the storied rivalry with the Buckeyes. After a stint in the SEC with Vanderbilt, Black is thrilled to be back in the Big Ten, ready to make an impact with the Wolverines.

Facing His Alma Mater

Coaching against Indiana holds special meaning for Black, who has that matchup marked on his calendar. He's eager to strategize and win the battle at the line of scrimmage, bringing a competitive edge to the field when the Wolverines host the Hoosiers.

SEC vs. Big Ten: Trench Warfare

Black brings a unique perspective on the differences between the SEC and Big Ten. He describes the SEC as “prettier” while highlighting the Big Ten's “gritty” nature, a sentiment that resonates with his focus on the trenches.

Path to Ann Arbor

Black’s move to Michigan came after an unexpected coaching shift. Despite things going well at Vanderbilt, a timely text from Ryan Phillis, and his brother Jibreel's ties to Michigan, made the decision to join the Wolverines an easy one. “Being here is a blessing,” Black remarked.

Family Ties and Rivalries

Larry’s brother, Jibreel, keeps him on his toes with frequent calls, often asking, “What are we doing to beat the Buckeyes?” It's clear that family rivalry fuels Larry's competitive spirit.

Expectations for the Defensive Line

Black is setting high standards for Michigan’s defensive line. His focus is on controlling gaps, winning individual battles, and creating chaos on the field. He wants the line to excel against the run and lead in sacks, pressures, and hurries, all while playing with technique, anger, and intensity.

Building Relationships

As Black settles into Ann Arbor, he’s prioritizing relationships with his players. By spending time with them outside of practice, he aims to make this spring ball session the best it can be. “Right now, what’s important is how do I grow and make it the best spring ball for the guys in my room right now,” he emphasized.

Spring Ball and Player Development

With 15 practices ahead, Black is focused on consistent improvement, stacking good practices and weeks together. He speaks highly of the position group, mentioning leaders like Enow Etta and Trey Pierce, as well as promising younger talents like Ted Hammond and Travis Moten. “I love the group, man … there’s a lot to build and get better at, but those guys are willing to work and learn.”

Coaching football every day is a dream for Black, who is committed to bringing his best to the field. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he hopes to inspire his players to seize every day with a positive attitude, making the most of their time at the University of Michigan.
