Michigan Wolverines Eye New QB Prospect After Recent Decommitment Shakes Up Plans

Michigan's search for top recruits heats up as they target promising talents like Dane Weber, amidst a shift in their 2027 quarterback strategy.

Michigan’s Quest for the Next Quarterback

Michigan is on the hunt for a new quarterback commit for the 2027 class following the decommitment of four-star Peter Bourque. The Wolverines have already extended offers to promising prospects, and one of them is showing significant interest in joining the Maize and Blue.

New QB Prospects in the Mix

Offensive coordinator Jason Beck and quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. quickly pivoted after Bourque’s departure. Within an hour, they offered a spot to four-star Kamden Lopati.

Soon after, California native Dane Weber, another four-star dual-threat quarterback, received an offer. Standing at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, Weber had an impressive junior year, throwing for 3,645 yards and 41 touchdowns, while also rushing for 688 yards and 14 touchdowns.

His existing relationship with Detmer and Beck dates back to their time at Utah, where Weber first received a DI scholarship offer.

Weber expressed his comfort and enthusiasm about the Michigan offer, saying, "It’s like talking to a friend," highlighting the rapport he has with the coaches. He looks forward to visiting Michigan from March 23-25 and possibly scheduling an official visit in June. Weber is eager to see how the coaching staff adapts their strategies to new players and explore the facilities and surrounding area.

The Wolverines face stiff competition for Weber’s commitment, with Oregon, UCLA, Cal, Kansas, Kansas State, Cincinnati, and Stanford also in the mix.

Expanding the Linebacker Board

Michigan has also broadened its search for linebackers by offering 2027 three-star Ethan Hauser from Buford, Georgia. Hauser, who stands at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, has attracted national attention with offers from top programs like Alabama, Texas, and Georgia.

He was thrilled to receive Michigan’s offer and is drawn to the program's legacy and winning culture. Hauser plans to visit Ann Arbor on April 9 to catch a spring practice and learn more about the program and its academics.

Four-Star Safety Plans Visit

Gavin Williams, a 2027 four-star safety from Damien High School in California, has locked in an unofficial visit to Michigan for April 9. The Wolverines’ coaching staff, led by defensive coordinator Jay Hill and safeties coach Tyler Stockton, have made Williams a top priority. Williams is impressed with Michigan’s track record of developing top-tier safeties and is eager to see the program firsthand.

Quick Recruiting Updates

Michigan recently extended an offer to 2027 four-star defensive lineman Seth Tillman. Additionally, new defensive tackles coach Larry Black offered three-star David Folorunsho. Four-star Darius Johnson has scheduled an official visit for June 19 and will be on campus for a spring practice on March 28.

The Wolverines are actively building a formidable recruiting class, aiming to secure top talent across various positions. With strategic offers and upcoming visits, Michigan is positioning itself as a top contender in the 2027 recruiting landscape.
