Michigan left Week 1 with more questions than answers, but Saturday’s 17-10 win over Oklahoma changed the conversation fast.
The Wolverines were already taking heat after squeaking past Western Michigan 13-12, a performance that knocked them out of the AP Top 25. It wasn’t a perfect performance. Bryce Underwood still has to keep growing, and the whole offense does too. But Underwood finished with 198 total yards and no interceptions, Michigan didn’t turn the ball over, and the Wolverines ran for 152 yards against one of the best defensive fronts in college football.
That matters because Michigan couldn’t run the ball like that against Oklahoma last season. Justice Haynes had the long burst, but the ground game was more steady overall this time. Underwood also ran the ball like Mateer did in last season’s matchup, and that ended up being the difference.
Rivals and Michigan haters are going to roll their eyes at playoff talk, and there’s a long road ahead before any of that becomes real. But after beating Oklahoma, the Wolverines have a lot more to point to than they did a week ago.
