Michigan Recruiting Momentum Just Put More Pressure On One Key Visit

Michigan makes a strong recruiting push as key prospects, including a 5-star QB committed to Georgia, plan campus visits.

Michigan’s quarterback hunt is getting serious in the 2028 class, and this weekend brings another big-name test case. Five-star Georgia commit Jayden Wade will be in Ann Arbor for Saturday’s matchup with No. 6 Indiana, giving Michigan another chance to make a move on one of the country’s elite passers.

Wade, an IMG Academy standout, is the No. 1 quarterback and No. 6 overall prospect in the Rivals Industry Rankings. He has been pledged to Georgia for nearly a year, but Michigan has stayed on him throughout the process. His advisor, Mike Evans, said the Wolverines have had an in with Wade for a while because of their earlier connection from the Utah days.

“The coaches there were at Utah and they offered him when he was younger,” Evans said. “That sticks out a lot.”

Even with Michigan pressing, Georgia still appears to be holding firm. Wade said he is still “locked in with Georgia” unless something “traumatic” changes that.

Michigan isn’t stopping with Wade, either. The Wolverines are also trying to bring 2028 five-star offensive tackle Antijuan Wilkes Jr. back to campus for a third visit this fall.

Four-star safety LaMarcus Army is expected to be at Saturday’s game as well. Four-star running back Xander Edwards was another possible visitor, but the noon kickoff rules him out.

The Wolverines also landed a new receiver commitment this week, flipping 2027 three-star Yuto Kawamura-Johnson from Toledo. His path to this point has been anything but ordinary.

Kawamura-Johnson was born in New Orleans, moved to Japan in fifth grade and spent much of his childhood playing basketball. He didn’t seriously start chasing football until age 15, then went on to represent Japan on its U15 and U17 national flag football teams. In Aug. 2025, he moved to Florida and left his family behind to pursue the sport full-time.

“Of course I love football. I left Japan and my family to come play football,” Kawamura-Johnson told Zach Blostein with 247Sports. “But the reason why I play football is to inspire other people.”

As a junior at Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange, he caught 50 passes for 766 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He committed to Toledo in June, but his senior year pushed him further into the spotlight. According to MaxPreps, he posted 575 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 24 catches.

That surge helped Michigan get involved after his visit for the Penn State game last week.

“It was my mom’s first time being on any type of college visit with me and to ever be in that atmosphere with me,” he said.

A few days later, he changed his commitment to Michigan.

“I want to inspire people, and that’s my why,” he said.

Another quarterback target also seems to be gaining traction with the Wolverines. According to Ethan McDowell of Rivals, four-star quarterback Levi Kerr is now high on Michigan after his visit for the Penn State game.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound quarterback from Waxhaw (N.C.) Marvin Ridge is ranked No. 102 overall and No. 11 among quarterbacks in the Rivals Industry Rankings.

Michigan only started reaching out about two weeks before his visit, but the relationship has moved fast. Head coach Kyle Whittingham offered Kerr in person while meeting with him and his family, and quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. has been building the connection as well.

“I wanted to get up there and explore that opportunity, and they jumped really high on the board,” Kerr told McDowell. “I really like Michigan.”

Kerr spent nearly 11 hours on campus, meeting the staff, touring the facilities and watching Michigan beat Penn State. The trip clearly left a mark.

“I know Michigan’s super high up there, for sure,” Kerr said.

He also has offers from North Carolina, NC State and Mississippi State. Kerr wants to return to Ann Arbor for another game this season, and he plans to make his commitment sometime between December and February.

With Wade coming in this weekend and Kerr moving quickly up the board, Michigan’s quarterback board is taking shape in a hurry.

Roddy Gayle Jr. Gives Michigan A Needed Boost At The Right Time

Roddy Gayle Jr. is back in the mix at just the right moment for Michigan, with a temporary restraining order clearing him to return in an upcoming exhibition against Houston. For a Wolverines team looking to get its footing before the real games begin, having a veteran guard with experience and proven skill available again changes the tone of the buildup in a hurry.

Mike Boynton made clear how much the return means, saying hes excited to have Gayle back in the fold. Gayle, meanwhile, said he leaned on support from teammates and peers while making the decision to come back to college basketball, a reminder that this wasnt just a procedural twist but a personal one as well. The only question now is how quickly he can settle back in and give Michigan the boost it has been waiting for. [Read more 🡒]

Michigans Indiana Prep Hinges On An Offensive Line Concern

Michigans second injury availability report for the Indiana game brought no changes from the day before, leaving the Wolverines with the same mix of players listed out, questionable or probable as they prepare for another Big Ten test. The biggest concern continues to sit up front, where offensive line injuries remain the most notable issue on the report and could shape how much flexibility the offense has entering the matchup.

There was at least a bit of encouragement elsewhere on the injury front. Coach Kyle Whittingham said safety Rod Moores injury is minor and not expected to keep him out long, while offensive tackle Andrew Babalola could be back to add depth to the line. For a Michigan team trying to stabilize its protection and get through the week with enough healthy bodies, the update points to a front five that still deserves close attention. [Read more 🡒]

Michigan Suddenly Has A Chance To Make Saturday Matter Again

Michigans offense looked different after the quarterback switch to Tommy Carr, and that alone was enough to make a sluggish afternoon feel a little more promising. The change came in the second half of a recent game, when Bryce Underwood was replaced and the unit found a better rhythm, giving the Wolverines at least a path forward as they try to steady themselves in a season where every meaningful snap seems to matter more than the last.

Now the spotlight shifts to Saturday, where CBS Sports analyst Brad Crawford has put Indiana on upset alert ahead of a matchup that suddenly carries real weight for both sides. A win would matter a great deal for Michigans College Football Playoff hopes and its Big Ten standing, while Indiana is dealing with the same kind of pressure, making this less like a routine conference game and more like a chance to change the direction of the season.
