Michigan QB Commit Linked to Virginia Tech and Penn State Amid Turmoil

Michigans recruiting momentum is under threat as top quarterback commit Peter Bourque reconsiders his options amid coaching chaos in Ann Arbor.

The Michigan Wolverines are in the middle of a storm - and it’s not just the kind that shakes up a locker room. In the span of a week, they’ve lost their head coach, seen top recruits waver, and are now staring down the barrel of a potential rebuild at the worst possible time.

It all started with the abrupt firing of head coach Sherrone Moore, who was then arrested and charged with three separate crimes. That’s left Michigan without a leader at the helm - and the ripple effects are being felt across the recruiting trail.

One of the biggest names to watch? Four-star quarterback commit Peter Bourque, a Class of 2027 standout who’s suddenly back on the radar of some major programs.

Bourque, ranked as the No. 85 overall player in the 2027 class and the No. 6 quarterback nationally, is also the top-ranked prospect out of Massachusetts, per 247Sports Composite. He committed to Michigan back in August, choosing the Wolverines over Penn State. But that was before the recent chaos - and before James Franklin, who was leading the Nittany Lions at the time, made a move of his own.

Now, Franklin is at Virginia Tech, and both the Hokies and the new-look Penn State program under Matt Campbell are pushing hard to flip Bourque. Both schools have extended new offers, and they’re not just kicking the tires - they’re in full pursuit mode.

This is where things get tricky for Michigan. Bourque isn’t signing tomorrow.

He’s in the 2027 class, which gives him plenty of time to re-evaluate his options. That’s good news for the Wolverines - if they can stabilize the program quickly.

But that’s a big “if” at this point.

Michigan is working to bring in a new head coach, but they’re playing catch-up in a market that’s already been picked over. Most of the top names have either re-upped with their current schools or already taken new jobs. Still, two potential targets have emerged: Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham.

DeBoer has been vocal about his commitment to Alabama, saying he’s not planning to leave Tuscaloosa anytime soon. Dillingham, on the other hand, has been a bit harder to read. There’s interest there, but no clear signal yet on whether he’s seriously considering a jump to Ann Arbor.

For now, Michigan is in limbo - and so is Peter Bourque. The Wolverines still have a shot to keep him in the fold, but every day without a head coach makes the pitch a little tougher. And with programs like Penn State and Virginia Tech circling, the clock is ticking.

This isn’t just about one recruit - it’s about momentum, perception, and the future of a program that was riding high not long ago. Michigan needs to make a move, and fast, before the ground beneath them shifts even more.
