Michigan is lining up another midseason roster boost, and this one could hit the defense hard.
After reports surfaced Wednesday that the Wolverines could bring in former Tulane and Miami tight end Alex Bauman, On3’s Pete Nakos also reported that Michigan could add former Cal and Boise State cornerback Jeremiah Earby to the 2026 roster. Both players were granted a fifth year of eligibility by the Washtenaw County Circuit Court, which issued them a temporary restraining order against the NCAA.
There’s another key detail here: reports say both Bauman and Earby are currently enrolled at Michigan. Neither one was selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, and neither signed an undrafted free agent contract.
Earby’s college path runs through two stops. He spent two seasons at Cal before finishing his career at Boise State, where he played his final two years. With the NCAA now operating under the new five-for-five rule, players from the 2025 class have been fighting for that extra season of eligibility.
At Boise State, Earby gave the Broncos exactly the kind of production Michigan is looking for. He started all 28 games over his two seasons there and earned second-team All-Mountain West honors last season. Across those two years, he posted 94 tackles, 20 passes deflected, five interceptions, and 2.5 tackles for loss.
The fit makes sense for a Michigan secondary that could use more bodies. Kyle Whittingham has been outspoken about the Wolverines’ lack of depth at cornerback. Even though Michigan has already played five games and is entering its sixth, Earby would still be a meaningful addition to that room.
The Wolverines are comfortable with Jyaire Hill, Zeke Berry, Smith Snowden, and Shamri Earls, but the drop-off after that group is a real concern. Michigan is one injury away from needing another corner to step into a bigger role, and Earby would help address that immediately.
There’s also a connection point built in. Earby is a 6-foot-2 cornerback, and he has familiarity with Michigan coach Tyler Stockton, who came to the Wolverines from Boise State after coaching the Broncos from 2024-25.
Michigan’s football program now appears to be in position to add two fifth-year players in the middle of the season, with Bauman and Earby both trending toward joining the roster.

Michigan Returns To Ann Arbor With Pressure On Bryce Underwood
Michigan comes back to Ann Arbor still looking for a cleaner footing in a season that has already grown uneasy, and the matchup ahead carries more weight than the records suggest. Penn State arrives at 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten, while Michigan is 3-2 and winless in league play, leaving both sides in search of answers after recent losing streaks and under first-year head coaches trying to steady things early.
The most closely watched part of Michigans side remains the quarterback spot, where Bryce Underwood is set to keep starting as the Wolverines try to find more consistency on offense. Offensive coordinator Jason Beck is also staying in place, and with the pressure building around a team that has not yet found its conference rhythm, this next stretch will say a lot about how quickly Michigan can settle in at home. Michigans QB Situation Is Suddenly Putting Bryce Underwood On Notice
Bryce Underwoods recent run has put Michigans quarterback picture in a different kind of spotlight. The Wolverines are asking for cleaner decision-making from their starter after turnovers piled up over the last stretch, and the conversation around the position has shifted from simply supporting Underwood to making sure the ball security issue gets fixed quickly.
Head coach Whittingham made it clear the standard is not going to change, and Tommy Carr is sitting there as a credible alternative if it does not. Carr has earned positive reviews in practice and in limited game action, which gives Michigan a real option should the mistakes continue, turning what looked like a settled job into a situation worth watching closely. Michigan Defense Gets A Big Opening Against Penn State
Penn State is heading into the matchup with Michigan without wide receiver Koby Howard, who will miss the game because of injury and extend his absence to a fourth straight week. It is a notable setback for a passing game that will already be trying to navigate one of the tougher defenses on the schedule, with Michigan entering the contest having kept opponents to 20 points or fewer this season.
For Michigan, Howards absence only sharpens the challenge for a defense that has leaned on its front and secondary to control games. The Wolverines are expected to bring extra pressure on Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht, and how well that line and coverage unit can disrupt timing could go a long way toward deciding whether Penn State finds enough answers through the air.
