Michigan’s recruiting momentum under head coach Kyle Whittingham continues to roll, and one of the latest names to keep an eye on is 2027 four-star linebacker Broncs Baker out of Tooele (UT) Stansbury. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound playmaker is emerging as a priority target for the Wolverines-and the interest is clearly mutual.
Linebackers coach Alex Whittingham made a recent stop at Stansbury High, and it didn’t take long for Michigan to extend an offer to Baker shortly after the visit. That early connection has sparked real traction in the Wolverines’ pursuit, with Baker now locking in his first-ever visit to Ann Arbor.
“I’ll be at the spring game on April 18th,” Baker confirmed. “Yes, this will be my first time in Ann Arbor and my pops will be coming with me. I’m looking forward to seeing that campus, the Big House, and sitting down with the defensive coaches and talking shop.”
That’s not just a casual visit-it’s a chance for Michigan to make a strong in-person impression on one of the top young linebackers in the country. Baker currently ranks as the No. 359 overall player in the 2027 class, the No. 27 linebacker nationally, and the No. 5 player in Utah, per the 247Sports Composite. And while those numbers will likely shift as the cycle progresses, the early signs point to a recruit with real upside and a growing national profile.
A key factor in Michigan’s appeal? The bond Baker is building with Coach Alex Whittingham. The two have stayed in regular contact, and Baker clearly values the way Whittingham balances intensity with approachability.
“He is great at checking in,” Baker said. “He’s all business and very focused, but very relatable at the same time.”
That kind of rapport matters-especially for a position as cerebral and demanding as linebacker. Baker’s appreciation for a coach who’s both locked in and easy to connect with could be a major piece of the puzzle as he weighs his options.
Speaking of options, Baker recently narrowed down his recruitment to a top six: Michigan, Boise State, Oregon State, Virginia Tech, Washington State, and West Virginia. He’s not tipping his hand just yet-there’s no current Crystal Ball prediction in play-but Michigan is clearly in the thick of it.
With his first visit to Ann Arbor now on the calendar, the Wolverines will have a golden opportunity to roll out the maize and blue carpet and show Baker exactly what their program is all about. From walking the campus to soaking in the atmosphere of the Big House during the spring game, this visit could be a pivotal moment in Michigan’s pursuit of one of Utah’s top young defenders.
