Former Michigan basketball coach John Beilein has been instrumental in shaping the success of current coach Dusty May. Beilein, a College Basketball Hall of Famer, played a key role in May's hiring by meeting with him and athletic director Warde Manuel in Florida. Two years and two Sweet 16 appearances later, Beilein continues to be a trusted advisor for May.
As May prepares the 1-seed Wolverines for their Midwest regional semifinal against 4-seed Alabama in Chicago, he speaks highly of Beilein's mentorship. "We talk regularly," May shared.
"He's always aware of when to reach out, knowing the demands of this role. His insights are invaluable."
Beilein recently took to social media to commend Michigan's achievements, reminding fans that such success is hard-earned. Since 2013, Michigan has made nine Sweet 16 appearances, leading the Big Ten in this period. Beilein, the program's winningest coach, knows the path well, having led the team to the Final Four in 2013 and 2018, with two Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles under his belt.
May, who led Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023, is now aiming for his second appearance with Michigan. Manuel recognized the unique rapport between Beilein and May during the hiring process, understanding that Beilein could offer insights beyond administrative perspectives.
"Coaches connect over basketball in ways administrators can't," Manuel noted in 2024. "John's involvement was invaluable."
May's first two seasons have been impressive, with a 60-13 record, a Big Ten Tournament win last season, and a regular-season title this year. While last year's Sweet 16 was a milestone, this year's is just another step forward.
Beilein remains deeply engaged, watching Michigan games and staying connected with the team's dynamics. May describes Beilein as an irreplaceable resource.
"Having a Hall of Fame coach who knows your team and the competition is incredibly valuable for us," May emphasized. "His experience and understanding make a significant difference for me and the staff."
