Michigan Lands Five Star Lincoln Cosby After Bold Reclassifying Move

Michigan lands a major piece for its future with the early commitment of one of the nations most versatile rising stars.

Michigan just landed a major piece for its future frontcourt.

Five-star forward Lincoln Cosby, one of the top prospects in the 2027 class, announced his commitment to the Wolverines on Tuesday. But here’s the twist-he’s planning to reclassify and join the 2026 class, fast-tracking his path to the college game.

At 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, Cosby brings a rare blend of size, skill, and versatility. He’s currently ranked as the No. 4 power forward in the 2027 class, but his decision to reclassify means Michigan could be getting a college-ready contributor sooner than expected.

Cosby picked Michigan over a strong list of finalists that included Alabama, Arizona State, Cincinnati, and Georgia. And his reasoning for choosing the Wolverines speaks volumes about the fit.

“When I watched Michigan and spoke to coach Dusty May, I saw how they utilized their big, skilled forwards, like Danny Wolf or Yaxel Lendeborg,” Cosby said in an interview. “I felt like I saw myself playing and producing in that type of system.”

That system under May has already shown how it can maximize multi-dimensional forwards-guys who can stretch the floor, pass out of the post, and switch defensively. Cosby fits that mold.

He’s a true three-level scorer with the length and instincts to be a factor on both ends of the floor. Offensively, he can finish at the rim, knock down mid-range shots, and step out beyond the arc.

Defensively, his wingspan gives him the tools to be a disruptor in passing lanes and a shot-altering presence around the basket.

Cosby now headlines a growing 2026 recruiting class that already includes four-star prospects Quinn Costello and Joseph Hartman. With Cosby in the mix, Michigan is building a foundation that blends high-upside talent with positional versatility-a formula that’s becoming more and more valuable in today’s college game.

Make no mistake, this is a big win for Dusty May and his staff. Not just because they landed a top-10 talent, but because they secured a player who sees a clear role in their system-and has the skill set to thrive in it.
