J.P. Estrella is sticking with Michigan.
The transfer forward has officially reaffirmed his commitment to the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season, keeping him in Ann Arbor even after Dusty May’s unexpected move to the Dallas Mavericks last week. It’s the latest bit of encouraging news for Mike Boynton Jr. and Michigan’s men’s basketball program as the offseason keeps moving.
Estrella now joins center Moustapha Thiam as the second transfer portal player to recommit to Michigan this week. Thiam made his decision public on Wednesday, giving the Wolverines a pair of important frontcourt pieces to build around.
Michigan landed Estrella out of Tennessee this offseason, and he came in with plenty of buzz. 247Sports ranked him No. 23 in the transfer portal and No. 7 among power forwards nationally, making him one of the most sought-after big men available. He was part of a transfer class that finished No. 12 in the country.
His time at Tennessee never really matched his talent, which is part of why Michigan was so eager to get him. The hope was that in Ann Arbor, he’d finally get a real chance to show what he can do in a system that fits him better.
That plan still stands under Boynton. Estrella should have a significant role, especially with Aday Mara, Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. all moving on to the NBA after last season’s national championship run.
That’s what makes this retention so important. With the portal mostly drying up and roster options getting thinner by the day, losing Estrella now would have been a major hit. Instead, Michigan keeps the big man it targeted for this exact moment, alongside Thiam, another high-level addition brought in to help fill the gap.
The two of them give Boynton a real frontcourt foundation. Thiam brings the rim protection and shot-blocking presence at center, while Estrella is expected to handle the 4. That pairing helps Michigan keep playing the style Dusty May established over the past two seasons.
And the rest of the roster is starting to come into focus, too. Boynton has already locked in Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney in the backcourt, with Thiam at center and Estrella at power forward. That group forms the core of what still looks like one of the country’s strongest rosters.
There’s still time before the portal officially opens on July 24, but Boynton has made the urgency obvious. Every commitment that stays in place before then matters, and every one of them says something about the foundation May left behind.

Michigan Just Lost One Of Its Biggest 2027 Recruiting Battles
Michigan spent months working to get Josh Dobson on campus and in the mix, and the Wolverines made a real push for one of the top defensive backs in the 2027 class. The five-star cornerback from the nation's elite tier, ranked No. 12 overall, visited Ann Arbor multiple times and even took an official trip the weekend of June 12 after LSU was bumped from his schedule, a sign of how seriously Michigan was pursuing him.
Still, the recruitment ended with Michigan watching one of its biggest battles slip away, leaving the Wolverines to regroup on a player they had treated as a major priority. The good news for Michigan is that the secondary class is not empty behind him, with five defensive backs already pledged and enough early commitment strength to keep the long-term picture intact while the staff moves on to the next high-end target. Michigan Missed On One Elite Corner But Landed A Massive Recruiting Win
Michigans cornerback board took a hit with five-star Joshua Dobson choosing elsewhere, but the Wolverines quickly answered with a significant win of their own. Four-star defensive back Monsanna Torbert committed to Michigan, giving the staff another promising cover man in the 2027 class and strengthening a position group that has become a clear priority in this cycle.
Torberts pledge matters beyond the rating next to his name because Michigan beat out Ohio State for his commitment, a swing that carries extra weight in any recruiting battle between those two programs. The Wolverines now have multiple cornerback commitments lined up in 2027, and the class is starting to look like one the staff can build around in the secondary. [Read more 🡒]
