Michigan defensive end John Henry Daley is back on the field and, according to coach Kyle Whittingham, back to full strength.
Whittingham said this week on The Rich Eisen Show that the All-American edge rusher is “completely healthy right now” after working his way back from an Achilles injury. The interview aired Monday from a Champions Circle event in Michigan.
"John Henry is completely healthy now. He had a a pretty severe lower leg injury. He's back to 100%," Whittingham said.
That’s a major development for Michigan, which brought in Daley expecting him to be an immediate factor off the edge. Before the injury in late November, he was tied for the FBS lead with 17.5 tackles for loss and sat second nationally with 11.5 sacks. Even after missing the close to the season, he still piled up major postseason recognition: Walter Camp First Team All-America, AFCA Second Team, AP Second Team, CBS Sports Second Team and All-Big 12 First Team from the league’s coaches.
If the health report holds, Daley gives Michigan a ready-made pass rusher at a time when the defensive line is taking hits. The Wolverines lost DT Rayshaun Benny, edge Jaishawn Barham and edge Derrick Moore to the NFL Draft, leaving room for someone to step in and produce right away. Daley has two years of eligibility left in Ann Arbor after redshirting at BYU in 2023 and then spending two seasons with Utah.
Michigan was always going to make sense as a landing spot. Daley had already worked under Whittingham and defensive coordinator Jay Hill, and he also followed a familiar trail of former Utes and Cougars to Ann Arbor.
"You know what you get with Coach Whittingham, right? You know that you get discipline, you know that you get hard work, and we expect to win games. And that's something that I love," Daley said earlier this offseason.
"He's got very old-school mindset in that we're gonna come in, we're gonna attack every single day and we're gonna be tough. And it's not always gonna be easy, but it's gonna be worth it.
And that's something that I love that you don't find everywhere. And that's something I wanted to continue to be a part of."
The continuity matters, especially while Daley comes back from a serious injury. Whittingham is in Ann Arbor, Hill is in Ann Arbor, and Utah defensive ends coach Lewis Powell also made the move.
"Coach Powell is probably, I would say to any recruit who's watching this, the best defensive ends coach in the country," Daley said.
Whittingham also used the interview to sketch out where Michigan stands defensively overall. He called Hill “a proven commodity” and said the Wolverines have quality pieces in place, even if a couple of spots are light on experience.
"Jay Hill is a proven commodity on the defensive side of the ball as a coordinator, and we've got some good players," Whittingham said. "A little thin at some positions, but I think the top 11 players are going to be very formidable."
He pointed to linebacker as one area where depth has to be built, with Ernest Hausmann, Jimmy Rolder and Cole Sullivan gone. He also mentioned the secondary, which lost Brandyn Hillman, Jaden Mangham and TJ Metcalf through the Transfer Portal.
"A little thin in the secondary as far as guys that that have accumulated a lot of reps, and same at linebacker," Whittingham said. "We've got some really good young players, but not a lot of reps accrued in that position group either."
