Michigan’s push to stockpile running backs is rolling right along, and the latest name on the board is one that should grab attention fast: four-star 2028 prospect Xander Edwards.
The Wolverines have already built real momentum at the position, with five-star Savion Hiter set to hit the field this year and four-star Tyson Robinson due in Ann Arbor in 2027. Now Michigan has jumped into the mix for Edwards, the Jacksonville, Fla., product from The Bolles School and the son of former Notre Dame and NFL fullback Marc Edwards, who played nine seasons in the league and won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2001.
Edwards didn’t hide how much the offer meant to him.
"I am so grateful and blessed for Coach Alford giving me this opportunity and believing in me," Edwards said about his offer from Michigan.
The 247Sports Composite has Edwards ranked as the No. 117 recruit in the Class of 2028, the No. 7 running back in the class, and the No. 17 player in Florida. He’s already piled up 37 offers, but Notre Dame looks like the biggest hurdle for Michigan in this race. Edwards is a legacy recruit for the Irish, given his father’s time in South Bend in the mid-90s.
Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford has already shown he can bring top-end talent to Ann Arbor, and Edwards looks like another major test of that pull. Edwards is eager to visit Michigan after landing the offer, and that interest matters in a recruitment that already has plenty of heavyweight competition.
The production is easy to see. In his sophomore season at The Bolles School, Edwards ran for 2,629 yards and 44 touchdowns. He added 17 catches for 211 yards, though his game clearly starts with what he can do out of the backfield.
There’s still a long road ahead, and Edwards will have to back up that breakout season over the next two years. But the talent is obvious, and Michigan’s interest makes sense if the Wolverines want to keep adding to a backfield pipeline that already includes Hiter and Robinson. If they’re going to beat out Notre Dame and the rest of the field, Whittingham and Alford will have to make Edwards a priority.
