Michigan football is getting a little extra star power for Saturday’s rivalry game, and it comes from the man who made Wolverine famous on the big screen.
Hugh Jackman, the actor who played Marvel’s Wolverine in 10 films, will serve as an honorary captain when Michigan faces Michigan State at Michigan Stadium. The announcement came in a social media post from UM Football roughly 24 hours before kickoff.
Jackman appeared in the clip wearing a maize and blue hat and track jacket, and he made it clear he’s leaning all the way into the role.
“From one Wolverine to the entire Wolverine nation, I’m so pumped to be the honorary captain for the big rivalry, the big game, in the Big House tomorrow,” the actor says. “Go Blue!”
The 58-year-old Australian also had a little fun with the moment on Instagram.
“Is it a simple mistake that I haven't received the playbook yet, on purpose??!” he wrote on Instagram.
Michigan, 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten, and Michigan State, 2-6 and 0-5, are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. in Ann Arbor. The Paul Bunyan Trophy game will stream exclusively on Peacock and air on NBCSN.
The Wolverines are looking for a fifth straight win in the series, while the Spartans are trying to end a six-game skid.
Jackman is best known for his long run as Wolverine, the claw-wielding mutant he portrayed across nearly two decades of the X-Men franchise, including three standalone films.

Michigan Hiring Story Feels Bigger After Biff Poggis Latest Reveal
Biff Poggis latest comments added another layer to a Michigan coaching search that already carried plenty of intrigue. After Sherrone Moore was fired ahead of the bowl game against Texas because of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, Poggi stepped in as interim head coach, taking over a program that had already leaned on him before during Moores absences. Now Poggi says he was a finalist for the full-time job before Kyle Whittingham was hired, a reminder that the Wolverines post-Moore transition was more complicated than it first appeared.
Poggi also made clear he has no issue with the direction Michigan ultimately took, even as Whittingham faces the usual challenge of adjusting to the Big Ten. For a program that has spent the past stretch dealing with abrupt change at the top, the revelation only underscores how many moving parts were in play behind the scenes. It also leaves open a familiar question around Ann Arbor: how much different might the coaching picture have looked if the search had broken another way? [Read more 🡒]
Michigan State Faces One Last Chance To Flip This Rivalry Mood
Michigan State and Michigan are heading into their rivalry game with plenty of frustration hanging over both sidelines, but the mood around the matchup is different after the Wolverines steadied themselves with a close win. Freshman quarterback Tommy Carr gave Michigan a needed lift in that game, and now the focus shifts to a meeting that always carries extra weight, even when the records are not where either side wanted them to be.
For the Spartans, the timing could hardly be more delicate. They have dropped six straight and are still sorting through the status of their starting quarterback because of injury, which leaves a lot riding on how they respond in a game that means more than the standings suggest. Both programs and both coaches know the rivalry can reset a seasons conversation in a hurry, and Michigan State still has one last chance to change the tone before this one is over. [Read more 🡒]
Michigan Women Just Earned The Kind Of Respect Fans Crave
Michigans womens basketball team just delivered the kind of result that can change how a program is viewed nationally, knocking off second-ranked UConn for the highest-ranked win in school history. TeYala Delfosse, Olivia Olson and Syla Swords were central to the moment, and even Geno Auriemma came away impressed, which says plenty about how complete the performance was against one of the sports standard-bearers.
The ripple effect could reach beyond the hardwood, too, with top-ranked 2028 cornerback recruit Nasir Richardson set to visit Ann Arbor for the upcoming Michigan-Michigan State football game. As that rivalry weekend approaches, the Wolverines are also managing a familiar injury watch, with several players listed as probable or questionable, so theres still plenty to monitor around campus even after a banner win on the womens side.
