When it comes to quarterback recruiting, Michigan finds itself navigating a unique landscape. Initially, with Peter Bourque committed, the Wolverines seemed set. However, a shift in the coaching staff and a new offensive strategy led Bourque to decommit, leaving Michigan scrambling a bit.
In the world of college football, having your quarterback locked in by the summer before their junior year is ideal. For Michigan, that means securing a commitment for 2028 this summer or early fall would be crucial.
Despite the setback, there are still talented prospects available. Michigan is making a strong push for Kamden Lopati, a four-star quarterback committed to Illinois. Another name on the radar is Dane Weber, a promising prospect from California.
Weber stands at 6-foot, 215 pounds, and is ranked No. 413 overall in the Rivals Industry Rankings, with a four-star rating by Rivals. His offer list is impressive, featuring heavyweights like Oregon, Washington, and Michigan, alongside Utah. Given his California roots, it’s no surprise Michigan is keen, especially with head coach Kyle Whittingham’s familiarity with the area.
Recently, the recruitment battle for Weber intensified as Georgia entered the mix, offering him a scholarship. This comes right after Weber’s multi-day visit to Ann Arbor, which certainly boosted Michigan’s standing in his eyes.
Reflecting on his visit, Weber shared, “We know Michigan is a great program, but being there in person was something special.”
While UCLA currently leads in the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, Weber’s recruitment remains wide open. Michigan’s next move is to get him back for an official visit. However, with other quarterback targets in play, it’ll be intriguing to see how Michigan’s strategy unfolds.
Meanwhile, Kamden Lopati is set to visit in early April, which could influence how aggressively Michigan pursues Weber. The Wolverines are clearly in the mix, and the coming months will be pivotal in shaping their quarterback roster for the future.
