Michigan’s lone commit in the Class of 2028 already looks like a difference-maker.
Three-star kicker Ryan Jung, who is committed to the Wolverines, recently put out a workout clip that did exactly what you want from a top specialist prospect: it stopped people in their tracks. Jung drilled a 67-yard field goal at his high school in Milton, Georgia, and the kick looked like it might have been good from 70 yards, too.
The video showed Jung sending it through with room to spare, and that ease is part of what makes the clip stand out. It was a clean strike, nearly dead center, and it came off with the kind of power that makes his ranking easy to understand.
Of course, there’s a big difference between a workout and a live game. Michigan fans know that this came off a holder with no rush bearing down on him.
The real test comes when the snap is live, the stadium is loud, and huge linemen are flying in trying to get a hand on the ball. That’s the part nobody can fully answer yet.
Still, Jung has the kind of leg that gives Michigan something to dream on. The Wolverines could be looking at another kicker who follows a path to the NFL, and last season’s Michigan kicker, Dominic Zvada, now with the New York Giants, has gotten off to a strong start to his rookie season by going perfect on field goals and extra points.
Jung’s commitment also matters because Michigan’s Class of 2028 is still bare bones. He’s the only commit so far, but landing the top kicker in the class is a meaningful start. Kerry Coombs helped secure that big leg for Michigan, and now the focus shifts to building around him.
That work is already underway. Michigan has hosted a number of recruits on game-day visits this season, and the calendar is only three games in. The staff is also still pushing on a few 2027 flip targets, including five-star wide receiver Dakota Guerrant, while trying to make the 2028 class a real priority.
There are signs that the Wolverines may be gaining traction with some in-state names, too. Michigan is trending with legacy recruit Marquise Ray, whose father, Marcus Ray, won a National Championship with the Maize and Blue in 1997. Another name to watch is Asa Burch, the son of Alfie Burch, who played for Michigan in the early 1990s.
For now, though, Jung is the headliner in the class. And after a 67-yard bomb that barely seemed to require effort, it’s easy to see why Michigan is thrilled to have him.

Penn State is heading into its Big Ten stretch missing one of the more productive pieces of its passing game, a development Michigan fans will track closely as the conference race tightens. Koby Howard will be sidelined for an extended period after suffering an injury in a recent game, coach Matt Campbell said, and the setback lands at an especially awkward time for a team trying to keep its offense moving against better defenses.
Howard had become a central part of the attack this season, leading the team in both receptions and receiving yards.
