Saturday night in Ann Arbor brings the latest chapter of the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry, with the state title on the line at the Big House. Michigan has won four straight in the series and enters as a near two-touchdown favorite against an injury-riddled Spartans team that is expected to be down to its third quarterback. The game will be streamed on Peacock for a national audience, and the buildup has been just as sharp as the matchup itself.
The harshest national assessment of Michigan State came from The Athletic, which described the program as being in its “deepest hole ever” after the Mel Tucker and Larry Nassar scandals, repeated leadership changes in the athletic department, and a long stretch of poor results on the field.
New athletic director Dan Bartholomae didn’t soften that picture. “Where we are in football is not OK, and it’s not (Pat Fitzgerald’s) fault,” he told The Athletic. “We’re going to build a support system around him and get this done.”
Fitzgerald, in his first season with the Spartans, has inherited a 2-6 team with no conference wins and a roster hit hard by injuries. The Athletic reported the program has invested more than $20 million into the roster, and Fitzgerald believes the foundation can still be built.
“From my perspective, there’s a feeling around here that we understand what it’s gonna take to win and how we need to go about that process,” said Fitzgerald. “When we get that second class together, really my first full recruiting class, now you’re putting multiple layers of guys in the locker room who only know one way to do it.”
From Michigan’s side, the message has been about matching the emotion of the rivalry with the right kind of force. Jon Jansen told Michigan tight end Hogan Hansen, according to The Detroit News, “It’s going to be a physical-ass game,” before adding, “Be smart, use your head, and just play your tail off.”
That kind of warning fits this series. The rivalry has produced plenty of ugly moments over the years, from Devin Bush planting his heels into the Spartan logo in East Lansing to the tunnel brawl a few years ago. Michigan’s coaching staff has also leaned on former players to explain what this game means, since 55 players on the roster have never taken part in this matchup and the staff itself has limited experience with the full edge of the rivalry.
Evan Link said Jansen drove home where the game will be decided. “(Jansen) kind of just reminded us where the onus lies in this game.
It’s on the O line, it’s on the D line. Whoever controls that battle, whoever wins the rushing battle, wins the game.”
That lines up with the numbers, too: 49 of the last 56 meetings have been won by the team with more rushing yards.
That’s a problem area for Michigan, which has not consistently controlled games on the ground this season. Still, the Wolverines know what kind of game this can become, especially with a rival desperate for a breakthrough.
Jyaire Hill sounded more than ready for the edge that usually comes with this matchup. “Oh, yeah.
I’m ready for (chippy plays),” cornerback Jyaire Hill shared with Angelique Chenglis. “Yeah, ready to twist some helmets.
Yeah, I’m ready.”
And even with Michigan’s win over Rutgers, there was a reminder that this team has not been separating from opponents with ease. Pate pointed to the performance of true freshman Tommy Carr and the fact that Michigan still had trouble putting Rutgers away.
“I’m not counting on Michigan to get margin on anyone this year. Even the games they win, they are close games.
That means I have to put at least a 6 (out of 10) on the upset alert concern meter for all Michigan games… Michigan State has no business beating Michigan, but yet, they’ve done it when they have no business doing it in the past.”

Michigan Just Got A Needed Recruiting Win At The Right Time
Michigan picked up a timely boost on the recruiting trail when Xavier Muhammad, one of the more highly regarded defensive line prospects in the 2027 class, reaffirmed his commitment to the Wolverines and passed on official visits to other programs, including Texas. For a program that always has to balance on-field priorities with long-term roster building, keeping a player of Muhammads caliber in the fold matters, especially as the season winds down and recruiting momentum starts to take shape.
Muhammad is still expected to make it to Ann Arbor for Michigans final home game of the season, a good sign that the relationship remains strong even with other schools trying to stay in the mix. His pledge also gives the Wolverines another important piece in a class that is already helping shape how the 2027 rankings look, and it leaves Michigan in position to keep pushing for more stability on the defensive front. Michigan Just Added A Famous Wolverine To Rivalry Week
Rivalry week already has enough built-in theater, but Michigan added a little more with a celebrity nod that fits the moment. The program announced that actor Hugh Jackman will be part of the buildup for the Wolverines' game against Michigan State, and he showed clear excitement in a social media post and video shared by the team.
The matchup is set for Michigan Stadium, with Peacock and NBCSN carrying the broadcast, so the stage is already big enough without any extra help. Still, bringing in a famous Wolverine gives the rivalry another layer of buzz, and it is the kind of detail that tends to travel quickly once the pregame attention starts to build. [Read more 🡒]
Michigan Showed Something Against UConn That Wolverines Fans Will Notice
Michigans trip to TD Garden ended with an 85-77 loss to UConn, but the Wolverines still left with something to build on in a rematch of the 2026 national championship. Trey McKenney was the headliner for Michigan, pouring in a career-high 22 points and giving the Wolverines a scoring punch they needed against a high-level opponent.
J.P. Estrella and Roddy Gayle Jr. also made meaningful contributions, which mattered in a game that asked Michigan to answer when UConn pushed the pace and the pressure. The result still counts in the loss column, but the performance offered a glimpse of what this group can be when it is balanced and aggressive, and now the attention shifts to a home date with Marquette.
