Michigan’s bowl picture barely budged after its 52-17 win over UTEP, and the most familiar landing spot keeps showing up: the ReliaQuest Bowl.
That was the takeaway from another round of projections released early Monday morning, Sept. 21. Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach of ESPN both kept Michigan in the same place they’ve had it before, sending the Wolverines to the ReliaQuest Bowl against Texas A&M.
Bryan Fischer of Sports Illustrated is on the same track. He, too, has Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl, and he has held onto that prediction even after last week’s version paired the Wolverines with Tennessee.
College Football News also stayed put. After matching Michigan with Tennessee last week, the site did not move off that projection in the latest update.
So for the fourth straight week, the overall theme hasn’t changed much for Michigan: the ReliaQuest Bowl keeps coming up, and SEC opponents keep showing up across the board.
The Texas A&M matchup, though, feels shaky on paper. The No.
23 Aggies just lost to Kentucky and also lost their best wide receiver because of injury. Their schedule still includes LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee and top-ranked Texas, which makes another run of losses seem likely.
Michigan, meanwhile, gets a major test this Saturday. The Wolverines host No. 17 Iowa at 3:30 p.m. in Ann Arbor, and the result could shape whether the conversation shifts beyond bowl projections.
If Michigan keeps rolling and handles the Hawkeyes convincingly, the Wolverines could start pushing into playoff talk. That would be especially true if it comes with another ranked win, since it would be their second of the season.
After an uneven start against UTEP, Michigan found its footing midway through the second quarter and never looked back. The offense finally moved with ease, and now the Wolverines will try to carry that into the conference opener.
