Michigan football got a reassuring update from one of its biggest 2027 commitments on Thursday, and it came from a player who could end up being a major weapon in the passing game.
Four-star tight end Colt Lumpris told Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine that he considers his recruitment to be “shut down.” The 6-foot-7, 240-pound prospect, ranked No. 214 overall in the 2027 class by the 247 Sports composite rankings, also said he was “locked in” with the Wolverines.
That matters because Michigan had to fight off some real competition to land him in the first place, with Alabama among the schools pushing hardest before the Wolverines closed late. Lumpris is one of the more intriguing names in Michigan’s 2027 haul, and the buzz around him has always centered on upside.
He has spent most of his high school career working from the slot, which gives Michigan a different kind of tight end to develop. The fit points toward an early role as a pass catcher rather than a traditional in-line blocker, and that’s part of what makes him so appealing.
The 247 Sports scouting report called him “an immensely high-ceiling pass catcher with an ideal blend of route-running savvy and contested catch ability. Could eventually draw looks from NFL scouts if he keeps progressing,”
He’s currently ranked as the 15th-best tight end in the 2027 class, though that number feels a little low considering the kind of ceiling scouts are seeing. Blocking remains a work in progress, but Michigan has already shown it can get a talented pass catcher involved early, as it did with J.J. Buchanan as a freshman.
That kind of usage could make Lumpris a problem for defenses near the goal line, where his size and skill set give Michigan a matchup piece that doesn’t have to line up as a conventional tight end.
Lumpris is the seventh-highest-ranked commitment in Michigan’s 2027 class. The Wolverines already have six commitments inside the top 160 and five inside the top 125.
