A viral celebration with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jared Goff last September is now the spark behind a new family event in Detroit.
Jason and Aria Raznick, who drew attention after the Lions stars jumped into the stands and celebrated with them following a win over the Chicago Bears, are turning that moment into Razmania Sports Festival. The idea is simple: give kids a chance to be around athletes, try sports activities and make memories without the steep cost that often comes with big sporting events.
“Now, those experiences don’t happen as often as tickets have really gone up in price,” Jason Raznick said. “So I wanted to create an experience where we could reach out to people we know in the space, and athletes, and see if they would come and volunteer their time.”
More than 50 athletes are expected to take part, according to Jason. Among the names listed are Lions punter Jack Fox, kicker Jake Bates, tight end Brock Wright and Michigan Wolverines running back Jordan Marshall.
The festival will include 40-yard dashes, basketball shooting and pitching contests. It will also feature athlete appearances and conversations about childhoods, setbacks and the roads they took to success.
Jason said the point is to give children something that sticks.
“When you’re nine years old, and you meet a hero, an athlete, it’s something you never forget,” Jason said.
The Raznicks also worked with five charities to bring about 300 children to the event, including kids who may not usually get the chance to attend sporting events or meet professional athletes.
Aria has become recognizable to some local sports fans since the Lions moment went viral, and she said that at school, kids still notice her and people sometimes ask for selfies. She has also been helping organize the festival, reaching out to people and helping line up about 11 vendors who will set up tables and sell sports cards.
That part of the event matters to her. “I love sport cards,” Aria said.
She also plans to take part in the pitching activities and other sports challenges herself.
Razmania Sports Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $10 online, and attendees will get a free pack of Pokémon or sports trading cards, according to the Raznicks.
For Jason and Aria, though, the event is about more than just a day of sports. They say they want it to encourage young people as the school year begins and leave them with the kind of memory that started all of this in the first place.
“We’re trying to inspire the youth for the school year, but for the rest of their lives,” Jason said.
