Oregon is proving to be quite the challenge for Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham. The Ducks have swooped in and snagged some top talent right from under Michigan's nose, starting with five-star wide receiver Dakota Guerrant. This 6-foot-1, 200-pound dynamo, the top recruit in Michigan for the 2027 class, cited a lack of trust in the Michigan offense as a key reason for his decision to commit to Dan Lanning's program instead.
But Guerrant isn't the only prized pass catcher from Michigan heading to Eugene. Four-star tight end Anthony Cartwright III also pledged his future to the Ducks this past Sunday.
While his decision might have been on the radar, it's still a blow for Michigan football. Cartwright, standing at an impressive 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, hails from Detroit Country Day and is ranked No. 405 overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
Michigan was indeed in the running for Cartwright, who is ranked as the No. 8 player in Michigan for the 2027 class. However, without an official visit to Ann Arbor, it wasn't entirely unexpected that Cartwright chose elsewhere.
On the bright side for Michigan, they have four-star tight end Colt Lumpris committed, who many believe has a higher ceiling than Cartwright. While it would have been ideal to secure both players, Lumpris is a solid win for the Wolverines.
Looking ahead, another key decision is on the horizon. Three-star wideout Tre Britton is set to announce his commitment on Tuesday.
Michigan is in the final three, competing with Miami and Missouri. Britton's recruitment has mirrored others, with Michigan showing interest but Missouri emerging as the frontrunner after Britton's official visit there.
The Tigers are favored to land the speedy receiver.
For Michigan, Quentin Burrell is the marquee wide receiver recruit in the 2027 class. The Wolverines boast a young and promising depth chart with talents like Salesi Moa, Travis Johnson, Jaylen Pile, Jacob Washington, and Jamar Browder, along with Andrew Marsh, J.J.
Buchanan, and Jaime Ffrench. While landing just one wide receiver might seem sparse, it's strategic to keep options open for future recruits or transfers, especially when you have a chance to bring in a game-changer like Guerrant.
Britton, ranked 11th in Michigan for 2027 by Rivals, is a notable recruit, but Michigan fans shouldn't be too worried about missing out. The Wolverines have already secured commitments from two of the top five players in the state, showcasing Whittingham's staff's ability to attract top talent. While there's room for improvement in retaining in-state prospects, the foundation remains strong for Michigan football.
