The Arizona Cardinals may be staring at a major problem in the secondary after Will Johnson exited Week 2 with a neck injury and never returned.
On Monday, head coach Mike LaFleur didn’t exactly soften the outlook when asked for an update on the cornerback.
"Will's got a neck. Potentially could miss the whole season. Sucks for him, obviously," said LaFleur.
LaFleur said he could not say whether Johnson will need surgery. But the message was clear enough: Arizona is bracing for a long absence, and Johnson could be a candidate for injured reserve if he’s going to miss most of the year.
That’s a brutal turn for a player who was supposed to take another step forward in 2025. Johnson, a second-round pick, was coming off a rookie season in which he handled starting duties and looked like the kind of lockdown corner he had been at Michigan.
The Cardinals were hoping experience would unlock even more from the former No. 47 overall pick. Instead, that second season has been thrown into doubt before it really got rolling.
And Johnson isn’t the only concern in that cornerback room.
Garrett Williams is still waiting to get back on the field because of an Achilles injury, while Max Melton left Week 2 with a toe injury and was described by LaFleur as day-to-day heading into the Cardinals’ Week 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
That leaves Arizona thin on the outside and in the slot, with Denzel Burke handling starting slot work while Williams is out, and Kei'Trel Clark plus Kalen King, who was recently elevated to the active roster, also in the mix.
"You know what's great is I think we had a deep corner room and here we are," LaFleur added in his press conference.
"Going into Week 3 and again, you're sick for Will. For obvious reasons, the person over the player and then obviously his teammates are sick for him too. But hey, it's ball, and we move on."
LaFleur also suggested Starling Thomas could be elevated from the practice squad while Johnson is sidelined.
"Star's played a lot of football here. Star's played good football, and I think Star's in a good spot headspace-wise and physically," LaFleur said.
Arizona enters Week 3 at 1-1, and the first injury report of the week is due Wednesday. Johnson could be placed on injured reserve before then.
