Michigan doesn’t get to ease into this one.
On Friday, the Wolverines and UConn finally meet again in the National Championship rematch that was announced back in May, and the setup feels different this time around. The Huskies are the hotter team early.
Michigan may be the one carrying the chip on its shoulder. Either way, this is more than a reunion - it’s a measuring stick.
For Michigan, the game is a chance to find out how tough this group really is. The stakes are real, and the Wolverines have a shot to show themselves, and everyone else, that they’re ready to chase another title.
The problem starts on offense, because UConn’s defense is no joke. Michigan was rolling a year ago and looked like one of the best teams in the country before the Huskies held it to 69 points in the championship game. This version of the Wolverines is not that version yet.
That’s why the backcourt has to carry the load again.
“And now it’s different, (Trey McKenney ’s) at the top of the scout report,” Mike Boynton Jr. said. “The scout report is to not let him get his comfort shots, be maybe physical with him, and he’s got to adjust the way he approaches that, and uses his ability and the gravity he’s going to draw to make the game easier for JP (Estrella), make the game easier for Quinn (Costello), make the game easier for guys like Ricky (Liburd) and Oscar (Goodman), who won’t be having as much attention on them.
… I think that’s the same for Elliot (Cadeau), who will ask to score more than maybe we did last year. Same for Roddy (Gayle), who will ask to playmake more than we did last year.”

Michigan Hiring Story Feels Bigger After Biff Poggis Latest Reveal
Michigans coaching search took on a different shape this week after Biff Poggi said he was a finalist for the job before Kyle Whittingham was hired. Poggi had already become a familiar face in the program after stepping in as interim head coach during Sherrone Moores absences, and then again after Moore was fired ahead of the bowl game against Texas following an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. His latest reveal only adds another layer to a transition that has already been unusually turbulent.
Poggi also made clear hes backing Whittingham as he settles into the job, even while acknowledging the challenge of adapting to the Big Ten. For Michigan, its another reminder that the coaching change was never just about one hire, but about how the program steadies itself after a messy stretch and hands the keys to someone new. Michigan Enters Rivalry Week With One Huge Chance To Change Everything
Rivalry week has a way of sharpening every detail, and Michigan is heading into this one with plenty to clean up and plenty to gain. The Wolverines are set to host Michigan State with both sides looking for a jolt, while Michigans offense keeps working to tighten the connection between quarterback Tommy Carr and receiver Andrew Marsh.
On the other side of the ball, the defense is expecting reinforcements with John Henry Daley and Dom Nichols on the way back, which only adds to the intrigue of how this matchup might tilt. There is also no shortage of game-changing possibilities attached to Michigans defense and special moments waiting to happen, from Chris Bracy in the backfield to Rod Moore and Jyaire Hill in the passing lanes, with Savion Hiter another name to watch if the Wolverines can turn this rivalry into a statement day. Michigan UConn Rematch Could Expose One Early Wolverines Concern
The rematch with UConn arrives with plenty of familiar stakes for Michigan, even if both rosters look different from the one that met on the sports biggest stage. Dan Hurley has already been through three national championship games, and the Huskies still have enough backcourt talent to make life difficult, with Silas Demary Jr. and Braylon Mullins expected to drive much of the guard play.
For Michigan, the early question may be less about the perimeter and more about how its frontcourt holds up on the glass and around the rim. Graduate forward J.P. Estrella and junior center Moustapha Thiam are important pieces in that area, while UConn added center NaJai Hines through the transfer portal, giving this meeting a chance to show whether the Wolverines size and rebounding can stand up to another high-level test.
