Boise State’s Spencer Danielson is treating Western Michigan like an unbeaten team heading into Saturday’s matchup in Kalamazoo, and he’s basing that view on what happened in the Broncos’ game against Michigan.
Ahead of the 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Waldo Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 23, Danielson made it clear he believes Western Michigan should still be considered undefeated despite its 2-1 record.
"I saw a little bit of what happened with the Michigan-Western Michigan game early on," Danielson said. "When I went back and studied this, unbelievable.
They're an undefeated football team, period. End of story."
The dispute centers on Michigan’s win on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Wolverines were trailing 12-7 in the final seconds when they missed a Hail Mary attempt as time appeared to run out.
Officials then put 1 second back on the clock after ruling that a Western Michigan player touched the ball while out of bounds with 1 second remaining. That set up a second Hail Mary try, which Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood completed.
"You watch that game, they absolutely beat Michigan at Michigan," Danielson said. "And that's not hype. That is what happened."
The FBS Oversight Committee later said in a statement on Wednesday, Sept. 16, that the final play should not have taken place.
Even so, the result stands because officials had already ruled the game over.
Saturday’s meeting brings together two teams that are both outside the top 25 and carrying College Football Playoff implications. The game will air on ESPN2.
Boise State comes in at 2-1 after losing its opener at Oregon and then beating Memphis and South Dakota.
Western Michigan has won its last two games, taking down Monmouth and Rice.

Krothe granted a preliminary injunction in the lawsuit against the NCAA. The decision also blocks the NCAA from enforcing its restitution rule tied to the case, giving the Wolverines a needed boost as they try to settle their roster ahead of the season.
