Chicago Showdown: Michigan vs. Purdue in Big Ten Championship
The Big Ten Tournament championship at the United Center is set to be a thrilling clash between 1-seed Michigan (31-2) and 7-seed Purdue (26-8). Michigan, the regular-season champs, are eyeing a No. 1 overall NCAA seed, while Purdue, once projected as a top contender, looks to reclaim its early-season promise.
Michigan's season highlight was a commanding victory over Purdue in West Lafayette on February 17. The Wolverines stormed to a 20-point lead in the first half and held on for a 91-80 win. Purdue's coach, Matt Painter, acknowledged Michigan's dominance, particularly their ability to control the glass and outpace the Boilermakers.
A key factor in that win was Michigan's defense on Purdue's standout point guard, Braden Smith. Although Smith ended with 20 points, he was scoreless in the first half and struggled from the field.
Michigan's big men also stifled Purdue's center, Oscar Cluff, limiting him to just four points and three rebounds. However, Cluff has been a force in the tournament, averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds in Purdue's victories over Northwestern, Nebraska, and UCLA.
Michigan's path to the title game has been dramatic. They overcame a late deficit against Ohio State, forcing the Buckeyes into a shooting slump to clinch a 71-67 win. The semifinal against Wisconsin was a rollercoaster, with Michigan surrendering a 15-point lead before Yaxel Lendeborg's clutch 25-foot three-pointer sealed the deal in the final second.
Coach Dusty May praised his team's resilience and ability to adapt, highlighting the contributions of Lendeborg and Cadeau, who were pivotal in the second half. Despite the absence of L.J. Cason due to an ACL injury, Michigan has consistently found ways to win tight games.
Now, Michigan faces a final test against a seasoned Purdue squad, aiming to secure back-to-back tournament titles for the first time since 2017-18. Given Purdue's fatigue from playing four games in as many days and the unfavorable matchups, Michigan is poised to capture another championship banner. Prediction: Michigan 83, Purdue 72.
