Lendeborg Stuns as Michigan Wolverines Advance to Sweet 16 in Style

Michigan Wolverines advance to the Sweet 16, fueled by standout performances and the dynamic energy of Yaxel Lendeborg, dubbed the "Dominican LeBron."

The Michigan Wolverines, sitting comfortably as the No. 1 seed, have punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 with an impressive 95-72 victory over the St. Louis Billikens in Buffalo. This game was a showcase of standout performances from key players like Yaxel Lendeborg, Nimari Burnett, and Elliot Cadeau, each of whom played pivotal roles in the win.

Yaxel Lendeborg was a force to be reckoned with, dropping 25 points and delivering a highlight-reel dunk that had fans buzzing. Reflecting on his transition from UAB to Big Ten competition, Lendeborg noted the significant adjustments in physicality and pace.

"It’s been a lot different," he shared. "I’ve learned to slow the game down and lean on my teammates when things get tough."

Lendeborg credits his former UAB coach, Andy Kennedy, for shaping his aggressive play style. "He used to yell at me almost every possession," Lendeborg recalled, emphasizing how it honed his quick reactions.

Nimari Burnett, who chipped in 11 points and was sharp from beyond the arc, highlighted Lendeborg’s electrifying dunk as a game-changer. "Dominican LeBron," he quipped, pointing to the momentum shift it sparked.

Elliot Cadeau, on the other hand, was the engine of efficiency, focusing on patience to minimize turnovers. "We felt like we could get anything we wanted offensively," he explained, emphasizing a strategy of consistent, smart plays over risky ones.

The Wolverines showed resilience, especially in the second half, learning from earlier mistakes. Both Burnett and Lendeborg praised Cadeau’s growth as both a scorer and facilitator. "He makes the game easier for all of us," Burnett said, while Lendeborg added, "He’s always been pass-first, but now he’s a real scoring threat."

Lendeborg’s nickname, "Dominican LeBron," has become a lighthearted staple among teammates, originating in the summer with Morez Johnson Jr. "It’s just funny every time they say it," Lendeborg admitted with a smile.

As the team looks ahead, Cadeau emphasized their comfort in a fast-paced game. "We definitely want to run a fast-paced offense," he said, noting that recent games have allowed them to return to their preferred high-scoring rhythm.

Burnett sees this year’s squad as defined by its consistency and chemistry, a step up from last season. He highlighted the team’s depth and versatility, mentioning key contributors like Lendeborg, Cadeau, and others. "With our size, length, and speed, we’re ready to come out with a win," Burnett declared, as the Wolverines head to Chicago for the Sweet 16.
