Michigan basketball is gearing up for some changes on the sidelines next season. Justin Joyner, a key figure in their coaching lineup, is set to take the reins as the head coach at Oregon State. Joyner's move marks a significant step in his career, having been a crucial part of Michigan's staff under Dusty May for the past two years.
Joyner's influence has been felt deeply in Ann Arbor, particularly in shaping one of the nation's top defensive units. Alongside former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton Jr., Joyner's leadership has been instrumental in the Wolverines' impressive defensive performance.
Coach Dusty May has been vocal about the strength of his coaching team, highlighting their exceptional collaboration and dedication. “I could talk for hours about these guys,” May shared. “Their teamwork is our superpower, and they've consistently exceeded expectations.”
Joyner's decision to move is also influenced by personal factors. His wife, Tracy Joyner, heads the women’s soccer program at Oregon, making the transition a family affair. Earlier in the season, May acknowledged the sacrifices Joyner made by being away from his family, underscoring the commitment required to achieve the Wolverines' historic 29-2 regular season record.
Despite the upcoming change, Joyner is expected to stay with Michigan through their postseason journey. This continuity is possible thanks to the transfer portal date being pushed to April 7, right after the national championship game. May emphasized the importance of supporting his staff's career aspirations while maintaining focus on the team's current objectives.
“Every situation is unique,” May noted. “If someone’s eager to become a head coach, we fully support them. The adjusted portal date means our guys don’t have to rush decisions, allowing them to finish what’s most important here.”
As Joyner prepares for his new role, Michigan will undoubtedly feel his absence, but his legacy in Ann Arbor is well cemented.
