In a heated clash to close out the regular season, the Michigan Wolverines triumphed over their in-state rivals, the Michigan State Spartans. However, the game took an unexpected turn when Elliot Cadeau was kicked in the groin by MSU's Jeremy Fears Jr.
The incident was clear from multiple angles, with Cadeau's reaction leaving little doubt about the nature of the foul. Even Michigan State's head coach, Tom Izzo, couldn't fully defend the action, which isn't Fears' first controversial play against the Wolverines.
Despite the evidence, Fears has yet to apologize or acknowledge the incident, maintaining his stance that he never intends to harm opponents. "I've never tried to harm, hurt, injure a player or multiple guys; that's not my intention," Fears stated.
"People make something bigger than what it is. That's not intentional, I don't try to do something like that."
The kick was a textbook example of an intentional foul, with Fears' leg swinging backward and upward in a movement that was anything but natural. The officials recognized this, promptly issuing a technical foul.
Fears, however, shifted the blame to the officials, suggesting their calls were detrimental to his playtime. "Overall, it hurts our team," he remarked, emphasizing his value on the court.
Fears is undeniably a talented guard, having had a strong season. Yet, his inability to manage these moments on the court is troubling, and his reluctance to take responsibility only adds to the issue.
Michigan's victory marked their second win over Michigan State this season, with Fears' actions unable to derail the Wolverines' momentum. The prospect of these teams meeting again is contingent on deep runs in both the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. Michigan, having secured the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament well before the postseason, would only face Michigan State in the conference championship if both teams advance that far.
As the NCAA Tournament bracket is still pending, the chances of another showdown between these rivals seem slim, leaving Fears with fewer opportunities to impact the game with his controversial style.
