Joe Milton’s run with the Dallas Cowboys is over, at least for now.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Cowboys released the former Tennessee quarterback on Monday afternoon after carrying three quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster. Milton had been waived, and Dallas moved on from him despite what he showed in the preseason.
Milton spent the 2026 preseason giving the Cowboys plenty to think about. He threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, completing 29 of 43 passes. Still, that wasn’t enough to keep him in the mix, and for the moment Sam Howell is the only backup behind Dak Prescott.
Milton entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots in the 2024 draft. He spent the first three seasons of his college career at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee, where he played from 2021-23. New England traded him to Dallas in April 2025 after he appeared in just one game for the Patriots.
With the Cowboys, Milton got into four games last season. He attempted 24 passes total, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions.
If he gets through waivers, there’s a chance he could circle back to Dallas and land on the practice squad. For now, though, he’s searching for his next NFL stop.
Milton’s Tennessee résumé was built over 29 games and 16 starts across three seasons. He started all 12 games in 2023, when he threw for 2,769 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also added 292 rushing yards and six scores on the ground that season.
While Milton tries to find a new home in the league, Tennessee’s former quarterback is still tied to a program trying to climb into the SEC title conversation. Kalshi’s current market has Georgia at 29%, Texas at 21%, Alabama and LSU at 9% each, Texas A&M and Oklahoma at 8% each, Ole Miss at 6% and Tennessee at 4%.

Brandon McCoy Jr. had already carved out a significant place in Michigans plans before the regular season even arrived, starting all three exhibition games on the Wolverines foreign tour.
