Desmond Howard didn’t exactly hide where he stood on Ohio State, and Kirk Herbstreit had the perfect reaction ready.
On ESPN’s College GameDay, the former Michigan star said the Buckeyes are a team "that I'm selling right now." Herbstreit, an Ohio State alum, fired back with a laughing, "What a shock," before the two briefly went into mock swordfight mode with the long pointer sticks the analysts carry.
Howard backed up his view by pointing to what he sees as a shaky run ahead for Ohio State. "Notable results-- blew a three-touchdown lead the last ten minutes [against Texas]," said Howard.
"This is going to be a big one for them today [at Iowa]. If they struggle, they've still got at Indiana, at USC.
Oregon is getting better. And this [the annual game with Michigan] is always a toss-up."
The Buckeyes are still No. 2 in ESPN’s FPI ratings, but they’re slightly behind Indiana in the race to make the College Football Playoff, with Indiana at 70.9% and Ohio State at 69.5%. Even so, the road is anything but smooth, with four ranked opponents in five games.
The exchange fit the longtime dynamic between two of college football’s most familiar voices. Herbstreit played at Ohio State from 1988 to 1992 and was the starting quarterback in 1992, when he threw for 1,904 yards and four touchdowns as the Buckeyes finished 8-3-1. He has since spent more than 30 years at ESPN and become one of the sport’s most recognizable broadcasters, long known as the calmer half of the pairing with Lee Corso.
Howard’s connection to Michigan runs just as deep. Though he grew up in Cleveland, he chose the Wolverines and played there from 1988 to 1991.
He won the 1991 Heisman Trophy, a season capped by his punt return touchdown against Ohio State and the famous Heisman pose. After his NFL career from 1992 to 2002, he joined Herbstreit on College GameDay and has been there for more than two decades.
For all the rivalry jabs, this is still a working relationship built to withstand a little teasing. Between Herbstreit and Howard, the swordfighting is about as serious as it gets.

Michigan Faces A Tense Finish For Elite Legacy EDGE
The race for Asa Burch is coming down to two familiar heavyweight programs, and Michigan has reason to feel good about where things stand. The four-star EDGE recruit, ranked No. 107 overall, has reportedly trimmed his list to the Wolverines and Notre Dame, with a decision potentially arriving as early as November. Burch has made the rounds to several major campuses, including Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State, but the latest chatter suggests this one is narrowing fast.
For Michigan, the appeal goes beyond the ranking. Burchs father is a Michigan legacy, which adds another layer to a recruitment already carrying plenty of weight for the Wolverines future on the edge. Recruiting prediction models currently point Michigan as the favorite, but Notre Dame is still very much in the mix, and until Burch makes it official, this one has the feel of a finish line the Wolverines would love to cross without taking anything for granted. Michigan Passing Surge Could Force A Receiver Test Against Minnesota
Bryce Underwoods latest outing gave Michigan a different kind of look on offense, with the freshman quarterback piling up a season-high 276 passing yards and helping put the spotlight on a receiver group that had been waiting for a bigger stage. Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan have been the Wolverines most productive targets, and the recent uptick in the passing game has at least given Michigan a clearer sense of which pass catchers are emerging as dependable options.
The timing, though, is tricky heading into Minnesota. Marsh is listed as questionable because of a possible injury, which could leave the Wolverines sorting out who can absorb his role if he is limited or unavailable. Michigans coaching staff is already weighing which receivers might be ready to step in, and the answer could shape whether this passing surge keeps building or has to be reworked on the fly. Ohio State Faces A Real Road Test After Jeremiah Smith Erupted
Week 5 of the 2026 college football season arrives with a crowded unbeaten field still intact, and the slate has no shortage of games that could start sorting the contenders from the pretenders. Several ranked matchups are on tap, top quarterbacks are in the spotlight, and the weekend also brings a little pageantry with Northwestern opening its new Ryan Field, while ESPNs College GameDay heads back to Iowa City for the first time in 20 years.
For Michigan fans watching the larger Big Ten picture, the most intriguing subplot may be how Ohio State handles its first real road test after Jeremiah Smith erupted early in the season. The Buckeyes have looked every bit the part so far, but the next step comes away from home against a defense and atmosphere that should ask more questions, even in a week loaded with unbeaten teams and marquee names.
