Michigan is only about a week into fall camp, but Bryce Underwood is already the name drawing the most attention. The conversation around the Wolverines has plenty of familiar camp checkpoints - the offensive line, the defense, the usual early-August questions - yet Underwood remains the one player everyone wants to hear about.
That’s because the offseason buzz around him never really stopped. With new talent around him and a new coaching staff in place, there’s been plenty of expectation that Underwood would take a step forward this season. Early signs from camp suggest that’s happening, though it’s still very much the opening stretch.
The newest voice backing up that idea is wide receiver Andrew Marsh, Underwood’s most trusted target and the player best positioned to notice what’s different. Marsh, who was Underwood’s No. 1 receiver last season, said the biggest changes he’s seen are in the quarterback’s comfort and maturity.

Marsh is not the first person inside the program to point to Underwood’s growth. The praise has been building for a while now, going back to Big Ten Media Days, when head coach Kyle Whittingham talked openly about wanting to get Underwood back to playing to his strengths. That’s been a clear focus for Whittingham and offensive coordinator Jason Beck this season, and it’s a big reason there’s optimism that Michigan’s offense can look different in 2026.
Beck added to that momentum last week when he said that even after only a few days of practice, he could already see improvement in Underwood’s footwork. That area had been a point of emphasis for Underwood and Beck after spring ball ended, and Beck’s early read was that the quarterback had clearly done the work over the summer.
Now Marsh is describing a quarterback who looks more comfortable and more mature, which matters even more because Underwood isn’t just any starter - he’s a captain. For Michigan, that combination is exactly what it hoped to see as fall camp gets underway.
