Bryce Underwood is giving Michigan fans a reason to lean in early in fall camp, and the clearest sign so far is the way he’s starting to mesh with his receivers.
Michigan is only a few days into camp, so there’s plenty of room for caution. No pads, no real contact, and everybody is still shaking off the rust. Even with that built-in slowdown, the early signs have been encouraging, especially after offensive coordinator Jason Beck said Underwood has already taken a noticeable step forward since spring ball, while still making clear that it’s early.
The most convincing evidence has come from Michigan’s own social media clips. In two recent videos, Underwood completed throws to J.J.
Buchanan and Andrew Marsh, the team’s established top wide receivers. One was a sharp outside throw to Buchanan over the shoulder, placed where the defender couldn’t get to it.
The other came with Underwood on the move, as he found Marsh in the middle of the field. Those are the kinds of plays that show more than arm talent.
They hint at timing, trust and a quarterback getting comfortable with the guys around him.

That said, this is still the opening stretch of fall camp, and nobody should race too far ahead. Defenders aren’t really turning up the heat yet, and the whole team is still settling back into football mode on both sides of the ball. It’s a promising start, not a finished product.
Still, the throws themselves matter. Underwood looked sharp, and Buchanan and Marsh did their part by making the catches - something that was an issue at times last season. With Buchanan and Marsh projected to be Michigan’s top receiving duo this year, the growing comfort between quarterback and receivers is exactly what the staff wants to see.
The real test comes later, when the pace picks up and the pressure does too. That’s when the connection will have to hold up, not just flash in a few early camp clips. For now, though, there’s clear evidence that Underwood is moving in the right direction, and that his receivers are responding.
Michigan opens the season on September 5 against Western Michigan under the lights of The Big House.
