Michigan’s shaky opener is already in the rearview, and Week 2 brings a far bigger test: No. 11 Oklahoma walking into the Big House after a 51-0 rout of UTEP. The Wolverines escaped Western Michigan with a Hail Mary and plenty of noise around the extra second, but that controversy is being set aside now in favor of the conversation that actually matters - what coaches, former players and analysts think about Saturday’s matchup.
One of the loudest Michigan voices in the mix is Biff Poggi, who has been around the program in multiple roles and is backing the Wolverines to pull the upset. Poggi’s path has taken him from locker room leader with Jim Harbaugh, to head coach at Charlotte, back to Ann Arbor under Sherrone Moore, then into an interim head coach role before landing at the Big Ten Network. He’s seen enough football to trust Michigan here.
Urban Meyer also weighed in on his podcast, The Triple Option, and offered some insight into Kyle Whittingham’s involvement in quarterback and offensive decision-making. Meyer said he is “very close with the Wolverine head coach,” and added that the staff “loves Bryce Underwood.” He pointed to the normal growing pains of a young quarterback, saying Underwood’s challenge is “spatial awareness, going through progressions and then executing,” and argued that a head coach’s job is simple: put the best option on the field and “play that human being.”
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables isn’t giving Michigan any help with the outside noise. He called Underwood “one of the most talented players at any position in all of college football” and said “All of his best days are still in front of him.”
Venables also noted that Underwood “won nine games as a true freshman starting quarterback - a tremendous feat in itself.” He didn’t stop there, either, describing Michigan as “one of the best rosters in college football” with “a championship-pedigree staff.”
Even with Michigan’s near miss last week, Oklahoma isn’t treating this like a soft landing spot. Venables made clear the Sooners are taking the trip to Ann Arbor seriously, especially with the game set for the Big House.
The conversation around Underwood hasn’t stayed limited to opposing coaches. During the Western Michigan game, tight end Jalen Hoffman took a shot at a ball from Underwood in the third quarter, and Underwood was shown laughing after the play. Former Wolverines Devin Gardner and Jake Butt, now both analysts, discussed that moment on The Blue Print, and Gardner, at least, was not pleased with what he saw.
The day after Michigan’s escape, the team held a players-only meeting. Starting center Jake Guarnera said the offensive line has to be better and can’t perform that way again.
Running back Jordan Marshall also spoke up for Underwood, taking accountability and asking what else he could do after the game. Marshall said that if Trey Pierce hadn’t called the players-only meeting, he would have.
