Michigan got a bit of good news on the Fourth of July, and it came from the top of its freshman class.
Brandon McCoy Jr. has reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan Basketball, keeping the Wolverines in line to bring in one of the most highly regarded newcomers in the country. McCoy is a McDonald’s All American and, according to 247Sports’ composite, the No. 14 overall prospect in the class.
He also arrives with a strong international résumé. McCoy played for Team USA last summer and helped bring home gold, posting 4.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game across seven games.
He was especially efficient on his two-point looks, going 88 percent on 17 attempts. His top performance came against Jordan in the Round of 16, when he finished with 13 points, seven assists and four steals.
Michigan landed McCoy during the halftime of the Fab Five broadcast of the Final Four game against Arizona. He stands as the highest-ranked player in the Wolverines’ freshman group and is expected to have a major role in the 2026-27 season.
McCoy brings real lineup flexibility, too. He can handle spots from the 1 through the 3, and there’s even a path for him to crack the starting five at wing this coming season.
He’s also part of a larger wave of players who have said they’re staying with Michigan under interim head coach Mike Boynton Jr. That group includes Elliot Cadeau, Trey McKenney, Moustapha Thiam, J.P. Estrella, Jalen Reed, Lincoln Cosby, Joseph Hartman and Malachi Brown.
