Michigan Football Staff Moves: What We’re Hearing on Tony Alford, Jay Hill, and Gary Andersen
As Michigan football continues to reshape its coaching staff heading into a new era, a few key names are starting to emerge - and there’s plenty of movement behind the scenes worth tracking.
Let’s start with the running backs room, where Tony Alford’s future has been a topic of discussion. According to sources, Alford has been offered the chance to remain on staff.
That would account for one of the two or three spots head coach Kyle Whittingham recently acknowledged would be open. Retaining Alford would bring some continuity to a position group that’s been a strength for Michigan in recent years - and it signals that Whittingham values not only Alford’s coaching chops, but also his ability to connect with players and recruit at a high level.
Shifting to the defensive side of the ball, the big news is that BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill is expected to take on the same role at Michigan. That move, first reported by 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, is significant.
Hill has built a reputation as a tough, detail-oriented coach who gets the most out of his units. His defenses at BYU were known for being disciplined and physical - traits that align well with Michigan’s identity.
But Hill might not be coming alone.
There’s strong buzz that Hill is looking to bring Gary Andersen with him - the former head coach at Utah State, Wisconsin, and Oregon State. Andersen has deep ties to the region and a wealth of experience, both as a head coach and defensive mind. While nothing is finalized, the possibility of adding someone with Andersen’s résumé to the staff would be a notable move.
However, BYU isn’t giving up Hill without a fight. Sources close to the Cougars say head coach Kalani Sitake is trying to keep Hill in Provo.
The belief inside the BYU program is that Hill doesn’t necessarily want to leave - but as one source put it, “Michigan is Michigan.” And that carries weight.
The Wolverines are a national brand, coming off a championship-level run, and the opportunity to coach in Ann Arbor doesn’t come around often.
Bottom line: Michigan is moving quickly to solidify its staff, and the pieces are starting to fall into place. Tony Alford has a chance to stick around.
Jay Hill looks like the next man up to lead the defense. And Gary Andersen could be a wild card addition if Hill gets his way.
Stay tuned - things are moving fast in Ann Arbor.
