Michigan State’s annual Grind Week has started to look less like a tradition and more like a weapon.
Tom Izzo leaned into it again this year, bringing in some familiar faces to help sell the program’s culture. Draymond Green, Kalin Lucas, Jase Richardson, Mateen Cleaves and several other Spartans came back to campus, giving the weekend both some old-school weight and a clear recruiting edge.
Izzo also used the event the way he always seems to: as a stage for his biggest targets. This time, that meant five-star point guard Antonio Pemberton and four-star center Jaydn Jenkins. Pemberton was the headliner, and Michigan State clearly made its move.
That move paid off fast. On Friday, only five days after Grind Week wrapped up, Pemberton committed to Michigan State.
The top-20 recruit in the 2027 class and the fifth-ranked point guard in the country had also been hearing from Kansas, Tennessee, Ohio State and others, and still had official visits left on his fall schedule. Instead, he shut things down after his first Grind Week and chose the Spartans.
That’s why the event has earned such a reputation. It keeps working.
Pemberton is just the latest elite recruit to leave East Lansing with Michigan State on his mind. Jase Richardson followed the same path, committing after attending Grind Week as a recruit. So did 2026 five-star shooting guard Jasiah Jervis.
For a recruiting weekend that has only existed since 2021, the track record is hard to ignore.
It gave Izzo exactly what he wanted again: his top target, secured almost immediately after the visit.
And at this point, it feels fair to start making room for Cleaves Jr. next year.

Michigan State Brings A Familiar Home Test Back At The Right Time
Michigan State is set to welcome a familiar test back to East Lansing this weekend, as the womens golf team hosts the 41st Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course beginning Sunday. The annual event brings together 15 teams and gives the Spartans a chance to measure themselves at home in a format that will ask for a lot right away, with 36 holes on the opening day before the final 18 on Monday.
