Michigan State’s 2027 recruiting board keeps getting clearer, and on Friday afternoon Tom Izzo added another major name to the mix.
The Spartans extended an offer to Asa Montgomery, one of the top small forwards in the class and a recruit ranked No. 27 overall in the 2027 cycle by 247Sports. Montgomery, who is from Powder Springs, Ga., announced the offer on social media, writing: “Blessed to receive an offer from Michigan State Univeristy! #agtg ✝️”
Montgomery is already drawing heavy attention across the country. His offer list includes Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Houston, Louisville, North Carolina, and Texas Tech, along with about a dozen more programs.
Michigan State’s interest fits the way Izzo has been building this class. He has been selective with his offers, and the Spartans have already been tied to a center, several guards, and now a high-level wing. That approach has been consistent: Izzo tends to do his homework before jumping in, and when he does offer, it usually means he believes the fit is real.
Montgomery checks that box. He’s listed as the seventh-best small forward in the class, and Michigan State’s latest move suggests the Spartans are serious about adding a premium wing to the group.
The bigger picture for the 2027 class is starting to take shape, too. Izzo’s early work points to a class built around a point guard first, then a big man, and now a wing. Michigan State has already offered point guards Jaxson Davis, Joshua Tyson, and Antonio Pemberton, with an official visit already lined up for Davis.
In the frontcourt, the Spartans have offered rising top-100 power forward Jayon Connor, four-star center Jaydn Jenkins, and 6-foot-9 center Kamsi Awaka. There’s also been an offer to three-star shooting guard Kingston Thomas, which shows the board is not locked into one path.
Still, the shape of the class is becoming easier to read: a point guard, a wing, and a center to help replace Jeremy Fears, Coen Carr, and at least one post departure, likely Anton Bonke. Montgomery’s offer adds another important piece to that puzzle.
