Tom Izzo didn't hold back when discussing Jeremy Fears Jr. after a heated incident on the court in Ann Arbor. The sophomore point guard found himself at the center of controversy once again, following a play involving his leg and Elliot Cadeau’s groin. Initially called a foul on Cadeau for pushing Fears, the play was reviewed and upgraded to a technical foul against Fears.
Both Izzo and Fears argued that the incident was a natural reaction to being shoved, but it certainly didn't look good for the All-Big Ten guard. Michigan fans clamored for Izzo to publicly reprimand Fears. However, known for his strong relationships with players, the Hall of Fame coach chose to support Fears publicly and address the matter behind closed doors.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Izzo shared his concerns about Fears, but perhaps not in the way rival fans expected. Izzo wants Fears to develop a tougher edge.
"I want him to get meaner and get on people...I want him to become more of a pit bull," Izzo revealed, echoing a similar sentiment he had for Miles Bridges during his sophomore year. Izzo believes in fostering leaders who play with grit and determination.
As the season progresses, Fears will be under intense scrutiny. He needs to play smarter, aware that every move is being closely watched.
Avoiding controversial plays is crucial, especially when they draw more attention than they might for others. Izzo's guidance will be key as Fears navigates this challenging period in his Michigan State career.
