EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's Sam Edwards Shines as Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award Recipient
In a testament to his prowess both on and off the field, Michigan State's sixth-year graduate linebacker Sam Edwards has been honored with the 2025-26 Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award by the Big Ten Conference. This prestigious accolade, awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the conference, comes with a $10,000 scholarship recognizing excellence in academics, athletics, extracurricular involvement, and leadership.
Edwards, a team captain in his final season, has been a standout not just in his linebacker role but also as a special teams ace. His influence extends beyond the gridiron, as he was appointed a student-athlete representative on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors in 2025, marking him as only the fourth football player to achieve this honor.
Hailing from Williamston, Michigan, and a product of Lansing Catholic High School, Edwards boasts an impressive academic record. He's a five-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, a four-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and a three-time Academic All-District selection.
His academic accolades also include being a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, a top scholar-athlete award in college football.
A Spartan through and through, Edwards played 41 games over his six-year tenure (2020-25) and earned four varsity letters. His leadership skills were further recognized when he was chosen as the Big Ten representative to the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee Student-Athlete Connection Group in February 2025. Beyond football, Edwards has been active in community service, participating in initiatives such as food drives, the Beautiful Lives Project, and hospital visits.
Edwards graduated in May 2024 with a double major in political theory and constitutional democracy/international relations, and completed a minor in political economy by December 2024. He went on to earn a master’s degree in marketing research with an impressive 3.9 GPA in December 2025. Preparing for a future in law, he gained experience as an Ad Hoc Law Clerk at Nichols Law Firm in East Lansing.
The Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award, established in 2008, honors the legacy of the late Big Ten Commissioner Wayne Duke, who championed academic excellence among student-athletes. Edwards joins a distinguished group of Spartans who have previously received this award, including Scott Piper, Lea Mitchell, and Ashley Harlock.
With his remarkable achievements, Sam Edwards exemplifies the ideal student-athlete, paving the way for future leaders both in sports and beyond.
