EAST LANSING, Mich. - A Spartan Triumph: NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships Awarded to Edwards and Mason

Michigan State University is celebrating a significant academic and athletic achievement as two of its standout student-athletes, Sam Edwards and Josh Mason, have been awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Each will receive $10,000 to support their continued education, marking a proud moment for the Spartans.

Out of 21 male recipients across fall sports, Michigan State joins Johns Hopkins as one of only two schools with two awardees. These scholarships honor student-athletes who excel not just on the field, but also in the classroom and their communities, highlighting the holistic development promoted by the NCAA.

Sam Edwards: A Leader On and Off the Field

Sam Edwards, a sixth-year graduate linebacker, adds this accolade to an already impressive resume. Just last week, he received the Big Ten's Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award, also valued at $10,000.

Edwards' journey has been marked by leadership, being named team captain in his final season. His influence extends beyond the gridiron as he serves on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, a rare honor for a football player.

A native of Williamston, Michigan, Edwards is no stranger to academic accolades. He’s a five-time Academic All-Big Ten, a four-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and a three-time Academic All-District selection.

In 2025, he was a semifinalist for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, underscoring his status as a top scholar-athlete.

Edwards' commitment to community service is equally commendable. His involvement ranges from food drives to hospital visits, showcasing a dedication to making a difference.

Academically, he graduated with a double major in political theory and constitutional democracy/international relations, completed a minor in political economy, and earned a master’s in marketing research with a stellar 3.9 GPA. As he eyes a career in law, Edwards has also gained experience as an Ad Hoc Law Clerk at Nichols Law Firm.

Josh Mason: Excellence in Soccer and Scholarship

Josh Mason, a senior defender from South Lyon, Michigan, is the sole Big Ten soccer player to earn this scholarship. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Mason has consistently demonstrated his prowess both on the pitch and in his studies.

In 2024, Mason was recognized with the men's soccer Scholar-Athlete Award at Michigan State's Academic Gala. His contributions to the team include scoring his first collegiate goal against Army and assisting against Bowling Green. As a kinesiology major, Mason is among 13 Spartans celebrated for maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA.
