In a significant move for Michigan State's rowing program, Stacey Rippetoe has secured a contract extension as head coach, ensuring her leadership through the 2029 season. Athletic Director J Batt expressed confidence in Rippetoe's ability to keep the Spartans nationally ranked, emphasizing the program's upward trajectory within the competitive Big Ten Conference.
Rippetoe, who returned to East Lansing in 2023, has been instrumental in revitalizing the Spartans' rowing success. Under her guidance, Michigan State's varsity eight reached the Grand Finals in both the Women's Sprints and Big Ten Championship regattas in 2025, marking their best finish since 2014. The second eight narrowly missed the Grand Final but claimed victory in the Petite Final, while the third eight, composed entirely of novice rowers, also advanced to the Grand Final.
Her coaching prowess has led to five athletes earning All-Big Ten honors over the past two seasons, with standout performances from Sabrina Gottschalk, Maddie Keift, and Ugne Rudaityte. Additionally, 34 athletes have been recognized as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, showcasing the program's commitment to academic excellence.
Rippetoe's history with Michigan State is rich, having spent eight years on the staff from 2000 to 2008. During her tenure, she played a crucial role in the Spartans' success, helping them reach seven NCAA Championship regattas and securing Big Ten Championships in 2005 and 2008. Her efforts also led to numerous All-American and All-Region selections, highlighting her impact on the program's legacy.
Beyond her coaching achievements, Rippetoe has strengthened alumni relations and community engagement. She founded the WeCanRow - Lansing program, a wellness initiative for breast cancer survivors, which continues to thrive as part of a national organization.
Before returning to Michigan State, Rippetoe served as head coach at Boston University, where she led the Terriers to NCAA Championships and multiple conference titles. Her tenure there was marked by significant achievements, including the establishment of a lightweight rowing program and collaboration with the Boston WeCanRow initiative.
Rippetoe's journey in rowing began at Rutgers University, where she earned her bachelor's degree and competed at the inaugural NCAA Championship. She later obtained a master's degree in kinesiology from Michigan State, specializing in sports psychology, further enhancing her coaching acumen.
