Michigan State is turning the night of its Izzone Campout into an exhibition showcase, with the Spartans set to face Incarnate Word on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. ET.
The game will be open only to Izzone members and season ticket holders, according to a school press release.
Incarnate Word makes for a curious exhibition opponent on paper, but there is at least one clear connection between the programs. UIW head coach Shane Heirman previously coached at La Lumiere School from 2014-17, and that puts him in the same orbit as former Spartan and five-star prospect Jaren Jackson Jr., who Heirman coached in high school. It also suggests Heirman is no stranger to Tom Izzo.
The Cardinals are coming in from San Antonio, Texas, after going 12-19 last season and 7-15 in Southland Conference play. Their schedule included games against Indiana and TCU, and they hung around in both, losing by eight and four points, respectively. Since moving to Division I in 2013, Incarnate Word has not made the NCAA Tournament.
For Michigan State, the addition of Incarnate Word means the Spartans now have three preseason games before the regular season begins against Quinnipiac on Monday, Nov. 2.
MSU is also scheduled to host UConn on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and visit Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 25.
Those two matchups are part of home-and-home arrangements with each school. Michigan State played at UConn in an exhibition last season, and Marquette is expected to make the return trip to East Lansing before the 2027-28 season. The results won’t count, but the games should still offer a useful look at where this roster stands.
Michigan State still has not officially released its full non-conference schedule, though most of it has already surfaced through team announcements, opponent releases or other reports. The Big Ten schedule was announced Wednesday.
At this point, the known non-conference dates are Quinnipiac at home on Nov. 2, Toledo at home on Nov.
5, Duke in Chicago on Nov. 10, Tennessee on the road on Nov.
17, Detroit Mercy at home on Nov. 21, Arkansas in Detroit on Nov.
26, Drake at home on Dec. 5, Merrimack at home on Dec.
12, Gonzaga in Palm Springs on Dec. 19, Oakland at home on Dec. 22 and Penn at home on Dec.
That still leaves one opening either unfilled or simply not public yet. There have been whispers of another marquee addition, and rising sophomore Cam Ward teased it during the Moneyball Pro-Am, saying he "can't wait" for it to be announced.
