Michigan State’s first week under Pat Fitzgerald has already brought a little extra tension, and the betting market is backing that up.
Fitzgerald met with reporters Monday for his first game-week press conference as Spartan head coach and spent plenty of time talking up Toledo ahead of Friday’s opener. He described the Rockets as a perennial MAC contender and a storied program, and made it clear he expects a real test.
Vegas appears to agree. According to DraftKings, the spread has edged toward Toledo, with Michigan State now in the single-digits after opening as a 10.5-point favorite. The movement suggests early money is coming in on the Rockets to cover, and if that trend keeps up, the line could be down around a touchdown by Friday night.
That kind of shift is enough to make some Spartan fans uneasy, even if the matchup still looks manageable on paper. Michigan State should be feeling good about Fitzgerald and Co. against a Toledo team led by a first-year head coach and a roster full of transfers. But the bettors clearly aren’t rushing to lock in the Spartans.
And honestly, that little knot in the stomach feels familiar in East Lansing.
Michigan State season openers have had a habit of starting with a jolt of stress. Last year’s opener against Western Michigan was a 23-6 win that did little to change the mood before the Spartans stumbled to a 4-8 finish. In 2024, FAU stayed far too close for comfort in Jonathan Smith’s debut, with Michigan State escaping 16-10 and leaving more questions than answers.
Mel Tucker’s first game as head coach was even rougher. Rutgers came into East Lansing and beat the Spartans 38-27 in a game remembered for Michigan State’s five fumbles and two interceptions.
The Mark Dantonio years had their share of opening-day stumbles too, so this has become a familiar script: expectations, anticipation, and then a first-game performance that leaves everybody holding their breath.
That’s the challenge in front of Fitzgerald now. He’s got to make sure his team comes out sharp and avoids the kind of flat start that has haunted Michigan State at the beginning of new eras.
