Michigan State closes out its non-conference slate this weekend with the fourth annual Kathy DeBoer Invitational presented by Auto-Owners Insurance, bringing Drake and Wright State into the Breslin Center for a two-day stretch of matches.
The Spartans host Drake on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. and then take on Wright State on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. Drake and Wright State will meet in a neutral-site match at the Breslin Center on Friday at 1 p.m. All KDI matches will stream on B1G+, and John Kreger will have the call for MSU matches on MSUSpartans.com and the Michigan State Athletics app.
MSU enters the weekend at 9-0 after a four-set home win over Oakland on Tuesday. The Spartans saw their streak of consecutive set wins end in the second set against the Golden Grizzlies, but the run still stopped at 24 straight sets, the second-longest in program history. Michigan State is also off to a 9-0 start for the second straight season, something it hadn’t done since 1975-76.
The Spartans are back in the AVCA Coaches Poll conversation as well, receiving votes this week for the first time this season since the preseason poll. Before that preseason nod, Michigan State hadn’t received votes in the national poll since 2018.
Tuesday’s win over Oakland showed exactly why MSU has been so hard to slow down. The Spartans hit .247 and limited the Golden Grizzlies to .082. Michigan State remains No. 1 in the nation in team hitting efficiency at .336 and sits third nationally in opponent hitting efficiency at .118.
Junior middle blocker Carmen Waye put together the best all-around match of her career against Oakland, recording her first double-double with career highs of 16 kills and 10 blocks while hitting .552 with no errors. She also nearly turned it into a triple-double, adding a career-best seven digs. Her 10 blocks were the most by an MSU player in a single match since Zuzanna Kulig had 12 against Illinois in the 2024 season, and Waye’s .552 hitting percentage leads the country this season.
Senior middle blocker Zora Hardison added six blocks and nine kills while hitting .333. Sophomore outside hitter Bianca Mumcular finished with 12 kills, her season high, along with six digs. Senior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska contributed nine kills and 12 digs.
Redshirt sophomore setter Malayah Long kept the offense humming with 46 assists, her second-best total of the season, and added eight digs. She ranks seventh in the conference with 10.14 assists per set.
Senior libero Lia Schneider also had a strong night defensively, posting a season-high 17 digs. It was her fourth match this season with double-digit digs and her third such outing in MSU’s last four matches.
The weekend event carries the name of Kathy DeBoer, an MSU Athletics Hall of Famer who was inducted in 2022. DeBoer starred as a two-sport athlete at Michigan State, helping the volleyball team to an 82-13 record and two AIAW Tournament appearances over the 1975-76 seasons while also playing three years of women’s basketball. On the basketball court, she was a finalist for the Wade Trophy in 1978 and ranks fourth all-time at MSU in career rebounding average.
DeBoer later spent 17 years as executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association before retiring in 2023. She also coached at Ferris State and Kentucky, where she won four SEC titles and earned SEC and National Coach of the Year honors.
In 2024, she received the USA Volleyball Harold T. Friermood "Frier" Lifetime Achievement Award, the sport’s highest honor for longtime contributions to volleyball.
Drake comes in at 5-5 and will be playing its fourth match of the week Friday against the Spartans. The Bulldogs dropped a five-setter to Omaha at home and then lost to Iowa on the road in straight sets earlier this week.
Senior libero Jasmine Dulan leads the nation in digs per set at 5.59. Michigan State has won the only previous meeting between the teams, a 3-0 sweep at home on Sept.
5, 1997. Head coach Darrin McBroom is in his 14th season with Drake in 2026.
Wright State is 4-5 in 2026 and is coming off losses to Jacksonville and Pitt last week after beating High Point in four sets at the Pittsburgh Invitational. The Raiders won the Horizon League tournament title last season.
The series with MSU is tied 2-2, though Wright State has taken the last two meetings in five sets. The teams last played on Aug. 28, 2021 in East Lansing.
Head coach Travers Green is in his fifth season with Wright State.
