Michigan State went into fall camp looking for quiet. Instead, the Spartans are dealing with an off-field story involving transfer offensive lineman Nick Sharpe just days before the season is set to begin on Friday.
The allegations surfaced publicly on Friday through Connor Earegood of The Detroit News, and the report included both sides of the situation. It also drew plenty of backlash, largely because Sharpe has not been charged with a crime and the case remains an accusation at this stage.
After the story was published, Earegood shared a statement from Sharpe’s lawyer, Mike Nichols. He also said he is “fairly confident” the matter will not go anywhere legally.
For now, that is where things stand. Bath Township police are still investigating, and Sharpe has not been charged with anything.
The timing puts Pat Fitzgerald in an early test before his first season at Michigan State even kicks off. Coaches never want to spend valuable camp time dealing with legal distractions, and now Fitzgerald has to keep the room focused while the questions start to pile up.
