As the 2027 recruiting class takes center stage, Michigan State football is laser-focused on making a splash. With spring ball around the corner, the Spartans are gearing up to host some top-tier talent from upcoming classes, setting the stage for what could be a pivotal recruiting season.
Spring is prime time for unofficial visits, and Michigan State is rolling out the red carpet for 2027 recruits. The goal?
Make a lasting impression that brings these prospects back for official visits in the fall. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald is keen on building a strong foundation for the 2027 class, especially with some big names expected on campus soon.
But Fitzgerald isn’t stopping there. The groundwork for the 2028 class is also underway, with elite prospects being invited to campus this spring. This proactive approach is a promising sign for the Spartans’ recruiting success down the line.
While Michigan State is casting a wide net across the country, the real battleground is in-state. Winning these local recruiting wars is crucial for Fitzgerald and his team.
One standout in-state target is four-star offensive lineman Antijuan Wilkes Jr. from Detroit Cass Tech. Wilkes recently announced his visit to Michigan State on March 28 for a spring practice session, just days after the Spartans kick off their spring practice on March 17.
Wilkes is a top priority for Fitzgerald and offensive line coach Nick Tabacca. With offers from powerhouse programs like Indiana, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Wisconsin, securing his commitment won’t be a walk in the park. However, getting him to East Lansing is a critical step in nurturing that relationship with the new coaching staff.
Ranked as the No. 174 prospect in the 2028 class and the 13th-best offensive tackle nationwide, Wilkes is also Michigan’s No. 6 prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite. Although 2028 might seem far off, early engagement with top prospects like Wilkes is essential, as competition from other elite programs will be fierce. Michigan, in particular, will be a formidable contender, making it imperative for Fitzgerald to make a strong, early impression.
