Michigan State Stumbles as Key Player Departures Impact Season's End

As the Spartans navigate the NCAA Tournament, the absence of Divine Ugochukwu looms large, highlighting critical gaps in their shooting guard lineup.

Michigan State basketball faced a challenging offseason, losing three key shooting guards for different reasons. Jaden Akins moved to the G-League after exhausting his eligibility, Tre Holloman transferred to NC State, and Jase Richardson made the leap to the NBA.

Coach Tom Izzo responded by bringing in veteran Trey Fort from Samford via the transfer portal, while also relying on Kur Teng, who was already part of the squad. However, it was a surprise transfer who emerged as the standout 2-guard.

Ugochukwu, initially expected to back up Jeremy Fears Jr. at point guard, became a revelation. He shot an impressive 44 percent from beyond the arc, played stellar defense, and took over the starting shooting guard role while still covering backup point guard duties.

His performance was a game-changer for the Spartans, providing stability and enhancing their defense to one of the best in the nation. Unfortunately, his season was cut short by a broken foot in a February game against Minnesota.

With Ugochukwu sidelined, Michigan State's initial concerns about the shooting guard position resurfaced, contributing to their early exit from the Big Ten Tournament. The team now faces the challenge of filling that gap as they head into the NCAA Tournament.

Several candidates could step up, though each comes with caveats. Kur Teng is arguably the best shooter on the roster, but his defensive skills may not yet be starter material.

Jordan Scott has been a breakout player, yet his natural position is small forward, and he sometimes struggles to keep pace with quicker guards. He also juggles significant offensive responsibilities.

Trey Fort could be the X-Factor; despite limited minutes this season, he showed promise in the matchup against UCLA.

As the NCAA Tournament begins, Michigan State's solution at shooting guard will be crucial to watch.
