Michigan State Just Made A Front-Office Hire Fans Will Scrutinize

Michigan State University welcomes Mike Polisky as the new CEO of Spartan Ventures and deputy athletic director, aiming to leverage his expertise in revenue generation and innovation to bolster the athletic department's finances and competitive edge.

Michigan State made another notable move in its athletic department Friday morning, officially bringing in Mike Polisky as the new CEO of Spartan Ventures and a deputy athletic director.

Polisky’s path to East Lansing comes with a long college-sports resume, and a complicated one. He spent 2010 to 2021 as Northwestern’s deputy AD for external affairs, working alongside head coach Pat Fitzgerald for his entire run there.

Northwestern briefly elevated him to athletic director, but he resigned less than two weeks later amid major backlash tied to a lawsuit filed by a Northwestern cheerleader. The suit said Polisky was dismissive of allegations of groping and sexual harassment, according to an ESPN report.

That lawsuit was later dropped in August 2024, with no settlement reached by either side.

Since leaving Northwestern, Polisky had not worked in college sports, according to the source material. His LinkedIn profile listed him as executive vice president at Intersport and president of the Association of Pickleball Professionals.

In Michigan State’s release, Polisky framed the move as a return to a familiar world. “I’d like to thank President (Kevin) Guskiewicz, AD Bartholomae, the Spartan Ventures Board and the talented leadership within the Michigan State athletic department for their support and belief in me,” Polisky said.

He added: “My previous collegiate experiences were among the most meaningful and rewarding of my career, and gave me a deep appreciation for the passion, tradition, and extraordinary sense of community that make college athletics so special. To have the opportunity to return to that environment at a place with the rich history, national stature, and passionate following of Michigan State is truly special and feels like coming home."

A big part of Polisky’s new job will overlap with the work Jon Palumbo recently handled before leaving Michigan State for a similar role with J Batt at Kentucky. As CEO of Spartan Ventures, Polisky is expected to focus on revenue growth for the athletic department. In his deputy AD role, he will serve as the primary administrator for football and men’s golf, according to the university.

Bartholomae praised the hire in the same release. “We’re excited to welcome Mike Polisky to the Michigan State family,” he said. “This is a critical time for our department, and Mike’s leadership will be vital to our championship aspirations.

“At every stop of his professional journey, both inside and outside college athletics, his career has been defined by innovation, revenue generation, and brand growth, resulting in a powerful connection between the team and the community. He will be a strong addition to our team as we define our vision for the future of Michigan State Athletics.”

Bartholomae and Polisky now step in as Michigan State’s top two administrators in the department, and they won’t have much time to settle in. One of the biggest priorities already in view is the NIL funding Fitzgerald and the football program will have available.

Michigan State’s football budget has been estimated by The Athletic at about $21-25 million, which sits in the bottom half of the Big Ten. That figure may need to climb to around $40 million next season if the Spartans want to build an above-average Big Ten team through the portal this winter.

Michigan State Suddenly Has A Jeremy Fears Jr. Concern Before Marquette

Jeremy Fears Jr. gave Michigan State a brief scare when he landed awkwardly in a recent game, the kind of moment that can change a game plan in a hurry. He returned, kept playing and finished without any apparent issues, which is why the Spartans are not treating the situation like a long-term concern heading into their matchup with Marquette.

Still, Tom Izzo is not brushing past it completely. Fears and the coach both expect him to play, but Izzo said he will remain cautious based on medical advice, and that leaves a small layer of uncertainty around the Spartans backcourt. If Fears is limited or unavailable, freshman Carlos Medlock Jr. would be in line to handle point guard duties, giving Michigan State at least one clear fallback if the game takes an unexpected turn. No. 5 Michigan State Now Faces A Frustrating Big Ten Test

A rough Big Ten night in East Lansing left Michigan State chasing from the start after Penn State struck twice early and forced the Spartans into a comeback mode they could never fully escape. Paige Kalal and Aubrey Kulpa put the visitors in front before Kayla Briggs got Michigan State on the board in the 55th minute, giving the Spartans a lifeline and a chance to turn the match back in their direction.

Michigan State did generate pressure after halftime and outshot Penn State in the second half, but the equalizer never came in a 2-1 loss that will sting in a conference race where little gets handed out easily. For a team still carrying a No. 5 ranking, this was the kind of frustrating test that can linger, especially when the chances are there but the finish is not. [Read more 🡒]

Michigan State's Early Surge Has One Freshman Driving Real Buzz

Michigan States quick start has a lot of people around college hockey paying closer attention, and freshman goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen is part of why. He was named the Big Tens Third Star of the Week after stopping 25 shots in the Spartans 5-1 win over RIT, a performance that came in front of 10,556 fans at Blue Cross Arena and helped underscore just how much attention this team is drawing early on.

The Spartans enter the week ranked No. 2 in both the USCHO and USA Hockey polls, and the buzz around the roster is only growing as Adam Nightingale keeps stacking wins. The head coach is two victories away from 100 career wins at Michigan State, and with a freshman already earning weekly league recognition, the early signs suggest the Spartans have plenty more headlines coming.
