Week 8 is bringing a full-on shakeup to the college football Top 25.
We’re seven weeks into the 2026 season, and Saturday delivered the kind of chaos that can reset the entire pecking order. A new No. 1 is coming, four more teams in the top 10 took losses, and half of the top 10 was knocked down in Week 7.
The biggest jolt came from Athens, where No. 1 Georgia fell at home to unranked Auburn just a week after going to Tuscaloosa and beating Alabama.
That alone would’ve made for a wild Saturday, but it wasn’t the only stunner near the top. No.
7 Texas also coughed up a big lead and lost to unranked Florida in Austin, adding another major dent to the upper tier of the rankings.
The weekend was packed with ranked-on-ranked drama. No.
2 Notre Dame traveled to No. 8 BYU, No.
6 Alabama went to No. 14 Tennessee, No.
9 Ole Miss faced No. 13 Missouri, and No.
5 Indiana met No. 4 Ohio State in the matchup that had plenty of eyes on it.
It was a loaded slate, and the games kept rolling late into the night.
Tennessee’s win over Alabama stood out as another major result, while Ole Miss handled Missouri in convincing fashion. The Ohio State-Indiana game also produced a painful ending for Nick Marsh, even worse than the excruciating last-second loss his former team took against No. 25 Northwestern.
Then came one of the night’s best finishes in Provo. Notre Dame mounted a second-half comeback and had BYU on the ropes, but the Cougars answered with a go-ahead touchdown with just under two minutes left. Notre Dame still had a chance, driving to a first-and-goal from the eight with four seconds remaining, but BYU held firm and took another signature win for Kalani Sitake.
All of that sets up a reshuffled ranking picture for Week 8, with a new No. 1 and a Big Ten team back on top.
Ohio State (4)
BYU (8)
Miami (3)
Tennessee (14)
Ole Miss (9)

The most eye-catching swings are hard to miss: BYU climbing all the way to No. 2 from No. 8, Tennessee leaping 10 spots to No. 4, Kentucky vaulting into the top 10, and Texas sliding from No. 7 to just inside the top 20.
There’s also a new team set to enter the rankings behind Northwestern, with the winner of Oregon vs. Nebraska expected to land in the Top 25.
What a week.

Michigan States Latest Collapse Puts The Blame On One Costly Problem
Michigan States latest defeat was the kind that lingers because it came down to the smallest moments and the biggest misfires. The Spartans were right there against Northwestern before late-game coaching decisions and execution errors tilted the outcome, turning a winnable matchup into another painful reminder of how thin the margin has been for this team.
Joe Rossis defense drew the sharpest criticism for the way the final minutes unfolded, and special teams also played a role in the collapse. Alessio Milivojevic had chances to help close it out, too, but Michigan State could not turn those opportunities into the finishing touch it needed, leaving the Spartans searching for answers after a loss that felt avoidable. Jordan Scott Could Swing Michigan States Season In A Bigger Role
Jordan Scott is entering the kind of season that can quietly shape Michigan States outlook before Big Ten play even fully settles in. With Tom Izzo already talking about his efficiency, work ethic and versatility, Scott looks like a player the Spartans can lean on in more ways than one, whether that means starting or sliding into different spots depending on the matchup.
What makes Scott especially interesting is how much his game has grown beyond simple depth-chart value. He has been working on both the mental and physical sides of his development, taking on point guard responsibilities while also extending his perimeter shooting, and Izzo believes he can handle three positions. If that expansion carries over once the games count, Scott could end up being one of the quieter reasons Michigan States season goes where it wants to go. [Read more 🡒]
Michigan State Suddenly Needs Unsung Spartans To Step Up Vs Northwestern
Michigan State heads into its matchup with Northwestern dealing with a patchwork lineup, and that has put a spotlight on the players who may have to carry more than their usual share. With injuries forcing changes at several spots, the Spartans will be leaning on a mix of depth and adaptability, from running back Jaziun Patterson to offensive linemen Rakeem Johnson and Robert Wright Jr., with the hope that the next men up can help stabilize things in a tricky week.
Defensively, the same theme applies as Kenny Soares Jr. is among the names expected to matter up front, while cornerbacks Jeremiah Favorite and KJ Deriso could be asked to absorb even more responsibility on the back end. It is the sort of test that can expose how much a roster can withstand, and for Michigan State, the challenge is less about one star carrying the load than about a cluster of unsung Spartans keeping the game from tilting the wrong way.
